As states across the country begin their reopening phases slowly amid the coronavirus pandemic, college football is preparing for a unique 2020 season. No schools are allowed to practice or meet in person as most, if not all college campuses are currently closed.
However, some campuses expect to reopen to students for in person instruction in the fall, thus football will be played, as of now. Since some states are in different situations than others, some suggested college football could still happen in the Fall but some conferences could play while others sit. Some even proposed, particularly in the Power Five, conferences could play without all of their members available.
As far as the Big Ten, they expect to have all 14 schools ready to go and playing in the 2020 season. Northwestern president Morton Schapiro told ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg that he can’t see a football season this year where not all 14 teams play.
“#Northwestern president Morton Schapiro, who chairs the Big Ten's council of presidents/chancellors, told me today, "I don’t see that we’re going to have a Big Ten [football] season with 12 of the 14 schools playing,” Rittenberg tweeted. “I’d be surprised if we play and it’s not all 14 of us.
“To clarify, Schapiro expects all 14 schools to be able to play this fall, unless state policies prohibit campuses from opening.”
Due to higher populations, states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey, which are home to Big Ten members Penn State and Rutgers, were the two locations where the coronavirus pandemic could affect the reopening of campuses, particularly at Rutgers. The main campus at Rutgers is housed in New Brunswick, which is in close proximity to hot beds in North Jersey and New York City.
It sounds like Schapiro is expecting the entire conference to be ready to go and for a state like New Jersey, the state is beginning a slow reopening process, particularly with Memorial Day weekend coming up. Beaches across the state will be open with social distancing requirements. However, Rutgers University has not committed to an in person opening for the Fall semester yet.
Ways to combat catching COVID-19 include self-quarantining from others, washing hands, avoiding hand to hand or physical contact with others. Coronavirus spreads between people in close contact with one another, typically within six feet, or through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Spread is still possible before people show symptoms, although that does not stand as the typical cause, according to the CDC.
Large, crowded areas should be avoided as movie theaters, work conferences and other traffic-heavy events are shutdown across the country per state jurisdictions at the urging of the CDC.
Coronavirus symptoms include fever, dry cough and shortness of breath. While flu symptoms are similar, they're often differentiated by high fever, exhaustion, chills, dry cough and body aches.
Isolation is encouraged if you feel you're coming down with flu-like symptoms that could be related to the coronavirus. Seek medical attention through your local emergency healthcare provider and stay away from other in close proximity.
