The University of Houston will allow football and basketball athletes back on campus on Monday to participate in voluntary athletic activities.
Athletes from other sports will arrive on campus throughout the summer in a phased approach, the school announced.
Upon their return to Houston, student-athletes will be evaluated for clearance by the UH sports medicine staff. These student-athletes will be monitored daily and expected to adhere to an abundance of health and safety protocols.
“Our executive staff has worked closely with university administration, medical professionals and our coaching staffs to develop a detailed and comprehensive plan for the return of our student-athletes to campus,” Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. “The health of our student-athletes and staff will continue to be our top priority as we implement this phased approach.”
NCAA regulations will permit only strength and conditioning personnel to supervise voluntary on-campus athletics activities through the month of June. Organized practices remain prohibited by the NCAA in all sports.
The SEC (June 8) and Big 12 (June 15) previously announced plans for athletes to return.
Earlier on Friday, the NCAA released a long and detailed plan to help schools bring athletes back to campus during a pandemic.
The NCAA’s Division I Council voted last week to lift a moratorium on athletic activities starting Monday. That cleared the way for voluntary workouts and training to begin at team facilities.
Schools have already started putting plans in place to test athletes, coaches and staff for coronavirus and implement social distancing. The NCAA says its plan is offered as guidance, consistent with federal and local public health guidelines.
Shortly before the NCAA released its guidelines, the University of North Carolina posted on social media its plan to bring athletes back to campus.
The college football season is scheduled to start around Labor Day weekend, with a few games being played the Saturday before the holiday weekend. There is to be a full slate of games from Sept. 3-7.
