College football, basketball can resume voluntary activities June 1 - AL.com

The NCAA Division I Council has approved a resumption of voluntary activities in football and men’s and women’s basketball beginning June 1, it was announced Wednesday.

All on-campus athletic activities have been shut down since mid-March due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The NCAA had previously set a moratorium through May 31, though eight hours of virtual instruction had been allowed.

According to the release, all activities must be “initiated by the student-athlete.” Coaches may not be present except in rare instances, and cannot direct or monitor activities.

“We encourage each school to use its discretion to make the best decisions possible for football and basketball student-athletes within the appropriate resocialization framework,” said Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Pennsylvania. “Allowing for voluntary athletics activity acknowledges that reopening our campuses will be an individual decision but should be based on advice from medical experts.”

Schools will bring athletes back to campus on their own timetable. Ohio State will reportedly bring its athletes back to campus on June 8. The SEC and Big 12 are also considering lifting conference-wide bans on athletic activities at some point in early-to-mid June.

In addition, the NCAA granted a number of waivers as it relates to attendance, scheduling and financial aid. The minimum football attendance for FBS membership has been waived for two years, as have requirements that schools play a certain percentage of their games against FBS members.
