Expectations. All college football teams have them, a few quite a bit more lofty than others. For programs on the verge of scaling the mountain or creeping further into the abyss, the upcoming 2020 season is an opportunity with a clean slate to prove in-house goals are obtainable and could result in national recognition.
And there are some coaches who don't shy away from it, either.
“What we’ve done, we’ve solidified and we’ve qualified,” Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy said earlier this spring. “We’ve got a spot in the Kentucky Derby. We’re in Gate No. 4. We’ve got a lot of training in order to do it. We’re going to be in the race. Now we’ve got to take care of our business over the next nine months, and that’s really what it’s about.
“Some years you can’t be in the race, a lot of things can hurt you. But we’ve got a spot. Now we’ve got a chance, to put the work in.”
Oklahoma State is one of nearly a dozen programs in or around the Top 25 with something to prove this season.
"I think it's debatable whether programs are actually under much pressure to win in 2020 with what the country has gone through," 247Sports national analyst Bud Elliott said. "Most folks will simply be happy to have football back. But with the return of football comes pressure and the realization that some windows are not open forever. To be clear, this is not a hot seat list."
