Beaver Football Classics Debut Friday - OSU Beavers

Football OSU Athletics

CORVALLIS – Oregon State University Athletics, in conjunction with Beaver Sports Properties, is proud to announce it has partnered to create the "Beaver Football Classics (BFC)." BFC is the rebroadcast of the Beaver Sports Radio Network coverage, brought to you by Your Local Toyota Dealers, of some of the top recent Oregon State football games.

The rebroadcasts will begin Friday, April 3 at 3 p.m. and is available on TuneIn, SiriusXM, The Beaver Sports Podcast page on OSUBeavers.com, and via selected Beaver Sports Radio Network stations.

The initial rebroadcast takes Beaver Nation back to Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008 when OSU hosted the No. 1 USC Trojans at Reser Stadium in a nationally televised game by ESPN headed by play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler and sideline analyst Erin Andrews. The radio crew of Mike Parker, Jim Wilson, Steve Preece, and Ron Callan were onsite.

GAME DETAILS

USC – Entered the game No. 1 in the country and coming off two impressive victories – 52-7 at Virginia and 35-3 at home over No. 5 Ohio State in Los Angeles. Mark Sanchez was USC's quarterback for the Pete Carroll led team that would not taste defeat during the 2008 season, except once!  USC had allowed 10 points through its first two games and a total of 23 the next six after visiting Reser Stadium. Most college football pundits had already announced the Trojans were destined to the BCS title game, but had they overlooked the Trojans' struggles the previous two dates in Corvallis?  One of those outcomes ended USC's 27-game then Pac-10 Conference win streak when the Beavers toppled the No. 3 Trojans 33-31 in 2006.

OSU – The Beavers, led by head coach Mike Riley, rebounded from a 0-2 start in a season-opening narrow loss at Stanford and an across the country jaunt to Penn State (USC's opponent later in the year in the Rose Bowl), with a home-opening win over Hawai'i 45-7. Yet, few, considered OSU a serious challenge for the Trojans in their march through the schedule.

RODGERS BROTHERS – USC's nightmare and national championship hopes were dashed by what Coach Riley described the Rodgers brothers as "they're not small, they're short." Jacquizz was the machine on the ground tearing up the Trojan defense with 186 rushing yards and two touchdowns. To put that in perspective, for the season, USC allowed an average of 87 yards rushing per game and just 51.5 through the first two contests. Quizz's older brother, James, accounted for the other two touchdowns, both via receiving on passes from quarterback Lyle Moevao. All of these totals against a USC defense that would produce eight NFL Draft picks a few months later, including first rounders Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews III, and second round star Rey Maualuga.

DEFENSE – OSU entered the game with suspect rush defense performances, including allowing 210 yards against Stanford in the opener and 239 the following week to Penn State. USC's total for the game against the OSU defense – 86 yards on 22 carries. Greg Laybourn led the OSU defense with 11 tackles and a memorable interception while Keaton Kristick added 10 stops.

AFTERMATH – The immediate aftermath was numerous national radio interviews by Coach Riley following the game that night and through the weekend. The win created momentum leading to OSU finishing the rest of the season 7-2 on its way to a 9-4 mark and a win over Pitt in a memorable Sun Bowl game. The Beavers would end the season No. 24 in the country.

USC would not lose again, including blasting Oregon 44-10 the following week in the L.A. Coliseum. The Trojans posted shutouts against Arizona State, Washington, and Washington State – and allowed seven or fewer points in three other contests. USC would end the year No. 2 in the Coaches Poll.

Season ticket prices for the 2020 season remain the same as for 2019, with an additional game and the 124th Civil War. For information on season tickets please call 541-737-2050 or online at osubeavers.com.
