Kansas football: Are the Jayhawks headed to the Big Ten? - KC Kingdom

Could the Kansas football program wind up in the Big Ten as everyone scrambles in the midst of conference realignment?

As the Big 12 works to figure out its future without Texas or Oklahoma as the Longhorns and Sooners are soon to be in the SEC, it seems as if other current members of the Big 12 could also be looking for greener pastures rather than working to keep the conference afloat.

One rumor seems to suggest that Kansas may have already found a new home for its life after the Big 12.

Tuesday, the Big 12 reportedly had a meeting with the Pac-12. During said meeting, the two were reportedly set to discuss a possible scheduling alliance or a merger. That would potentially keep the Big 12 moving forward, even if it was in some new incarnation or form.

But things could get weird in the midst of conference realignment. Especially if Kansas decides to leave in the middle of the party. Tuesday afternoon, Dillon Davis tweeted out that Mike Vernon had sources telling him KU was bound for the Big Ten.

However, that move may or may not happen.

It’s not exactly certain or set in stone just yet, so let’s stop counting chickens before they’ve hatched for one second. Vernon, the guy Davis referenced in his tweet, took to Twitter to clarify exactly what he said on the radio.

So, at the moment, Kansas making the move to the Big Ten is a definite maybe.

It sounds like there’s a possibility that this move could happen and it seems like Vernon does have some sources who are indicating that Kansas would like to head on for the Big Ten, but it doesn’t look like there’s anything official set in motion just yet.

Kansas football: Will the Jayhawks be headed for the Big Ten?

The Jayhawks could certainly do a lot worse than the Big Ten. Of all the conferences out there available for Kansas who would also happen to be interested in Kansas, the Big Ten might be a pretty natural fit for the Jayhawks.

While many conferences would turn away from KU because the Kansas football program is very clearly a fixer upper, the Big Ten has plenty of football programs like that. It’s not like Rutgers, Nebraska, Illinois, Purdue, Michigan, or Michigan State looked great last season. And there’s a very real chance that several of those teams won’t see significant improvements under their current coaching staffs.

Clearly, Kansas does have a really good men’s basketball following behind it. The Jayhawks are a powerhouse and that’s known and celebrated. It’s one reason why some conferences would certainly be interested in courting KU.

Given the Big Ten’s rich tradition of really good college basketball teams, the Jayhawks could be a natural fit in the conference should Kansas actually pull the trigger and leave the Big 12.
