FSU football: Quick thoughts on Nole depth chart against Notre Dame - Chop Chat

FSU football released its depth chart Monday afternoon for the Notre Dame game that will take place Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

There were not too many surprises, but there were a couple of things that caught my eye. I’ll expound more on this when I record the Built For Playmakers podcast tonight, but here are some things off the top of my head:

Offense

  • QB-No suprise there as I expect both players to play. Does it mean anything that Jordan Travis was listed first?
  • RB-No surprise. I expect Corbin and Toafili to be the 1-2 punch most of the year.
  • WR-No surprises. I don’t know why some people questioned if Parchment would be a starter?
  • TE-No surprises.
  • OL-I like this offensive line and think they can be serviceable if the injury bug stays away. It looks like Notre Dame transfer Dillan Gibbons beat out Dontae Lucas. I like Scott and Washington at tackle, which allows DLT to play a more natural position at guard.

Defense

  • DL-No surprises. I’m glad that Dennis Briggs Jr. is getting the start. Lovett listed first makes sense as the coaches have raved about him all offseason and both guys can cause havoc at the line of scrimmage. It’s good to see Keir Thomas and Jermaine Johnson at the end positions.
  • LB-I was surprised at first to see DJ Lundy listed over Stephan Dix Jr. However, in hindsight, the coaches talked more positively about him than Dix throughout fall camp. I’m glad they found a spot for Amari Gainer, and look at Jadarius Green-McKnight on the two-deep after making the switch from safety a few practices ago! I’m not surprised to see Kalen DeLoach as a starter, as the coaches have mentioned his progress in the offseason.
  • Secondary-I like this secondary a lot. I think Travis Jay and Jarvis Brownlee are likely your two best options by a good bit. Jammie Robinson at nickel with Kevin Knowles II looks good. Brendan Gant is a name we haven’t heard much from in fall camp, but he played better as the season progressed last year. Akeem Dent at FS has been talked about for a while now.

Thoughts

I think this depth chart is about as good as one could hope for going into the season. It looks like they have found a way to get their best 11 on both sides of the ball. The team is still young, and the transfers came in to do what the coaches wanted them to do.

That is to provide experience and production while allowing the younger players time to develop. Be sure to subscribe and download the Built For Playmakers podcast tomorrow morning, as I’ll expound on my game-by-game predictions from Sunday as well.
