12 Days to Purdue Football: Austin Burton & Jah’von Grigsby - Hammer and Rails

Today we have two players, including a potential winner of the quarterback derby.

Austin Burton - Grad Transfer

Newton, MA (UCLA)

6’2”, 210 pounds

Quarterback

2021 Projection: Potential Starter

If Burton wins the starting job his first start at Purdue will come against a familiar opponent. In his time at UCLA he made one start... against Oregon State in 2019. He showed his versatility in that game, throwing for 236 yards and rushing for another 64. That was his most extensive playing time in three years at UCLA, but he did graduate in three years before coming to Purdue.

Last season burton did not play a single snap. He backed up Aidan O’Connell and Jack Plummer, but never got a chance to to show his skills as a mobile quarterback. 247 had him as a 4-star QB out of high school, where he threw for 8,900 yards and 87 touchdowns between Newton Mass South in Massachusetts and West Orange HS in Winter Park, Florida.

Burton seems to be in the running to start at QB. He also has the potential to play a series or two as a change-of-pace guy, too. Given his familiarity with Oregon State (and the importance of winning that game) he could have an edge for the opener.

Jah’von Grigsby - Fr.

Baton Rouge, LA (Scotlandville Magnet HS)

5’11”, 195 pounds

Safety 2021 Projection: Redshirt

Grigsy is an incoming freshman that as a 3-star recruit out of Louisiana. He is a decent pickup coming out of LSU’s own back yard, and LSU is a lot higher in the college football food chain than Purdue. His local news thinks he is a bit of a late bloomer:

“I wake up in the morning. Take my phone calls and cannot talk. Get my little brother and sister situated. More interviews. more zoom calls. end the night. Repeat,” said Grigsby. “So sometimes like people around you getting offers before you do, and sometimes you feel like you are better than them. I called my mom and I was mad. And like I was like 30 minutes later the coach from Miami calls. “

That was when the floodgates opened. Now he’s gotten 16 offers since the beginning of 2020. Grigsby knows his perfect school will have to accommodate his brains, as well as his braun.

“He’s a type of kid is one day is going to go work for a fortune 500 organization, make, you know, three, four or five times the money I’m making right now being a high school football coach,” said Scotlandville head coach Lester Ricard.

He was a flip from Michigan State with additional offers from Auburn, Indiana, Miami, and Louisville.
