How the East fared in Week 1 of high school football season - HighSchoolOT

— In a matchup that featured the two-time defending 4AA title winners and the two-time defending 4A East Region winners, Julius Chambers went on the road, waited out a lengthy delay, and eventually held on for a 35-29 win over Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh.

The Cougars, playing under their new namesake for the first time, led 35-9 midway through the third quarter before Gibbons answered back with three straight touchdowns and recovered an onside kick to have a chance at a game-winning drive. But with less than a minute remaining and the Crusaders facing a 4th-and-30, Chambers (#1 HSOT West) secured the win with an interception by Trey Green.

The game went into a lightning delay not long before 8:30 p.m. with Chambers leading 21-9 late in the second quarter, and action didn’t resume until 11:34 p.m.

Offensive standout Daylan Smothers scored twice in the first half for Chambers, which also scored twice via its defense in the victory.

Once down by 26 points, Gibbons (#3 HSOT East) stormed back with a pair of touchdown throws by quarterback Connor Clark and a rushing touchdown by Blake Raphael. Eventually, however, Chambers had enough in the tank to hold on.

How the HSOT Top 25 fared

#2 Cleveland 52, Cary 0

Fresh off a state title game appearance, Cleveland began the fall in dominant fashion with a 52-0 win over Cary. Senior running back Omarion Hampton had four touchdowns and 154 yards rushing in the first half alone as the Rams’ current group of seniors improved to 20-2 at home.

#4 Richmond 56, #4 (West) Mount Tabor 41

In a battle that pitted the No. 4 teams in HSOT’s East and West rankings, Richmond held on for a 56-41 road win at Mount Tabor, having raced out to a 35-point lead earlier in the game. Seven different Raiders scored in the victory, including Cason Douglas who caught a touchdown and returned a kickoff 87 yards for a score.

#7 South View 43, Overhills 0

The Tigers started the season off with a stout defensive performance, shutting out Overhills. Offensively, quarterback Cedavion Wimbley threw for two scores, and running backs Michael Breedlove and Cory Barr each added scores.

(WEATHER DELAY, 2Q) #8 Lee County 26, Northwood 0

Lee County was off to a fast start at Northwood in neighboring Chatham County when a lightning delay brought the game to a halt in the second quarter with the visitors leading 20-0. The game will resume on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Rocky Mount 12, #9 Tarboro 0

The Vikings’ season began with a shocking 12-0 loss to Rocky Mount, their first shutout defeat since 2007. Seallio Alphonse’s 20-yard receiving touchdown and Jaquan Horne’s 20-yard touchdown run provided Rocky Mount all the offense it needed.

(WEATHER DELAY, 1Q) #10 Panther Creek 6, Hillside 0

The Catamounts took an early lead before Mother Nature intervened. The two teams will resume action Saturday night at 6 p.m.

Hunt 34, #12 J.H. Rose 26

Hunt’s defense and special teams (pick-6, kickoff returned for touchdown, late interception) rose to the occasion for the Warriors, as they knocked off J.H. Rose despite a big night Rampants running back Michael Allen.

(WEATHER DELAY, 1Q) #13 Scotland 14, Northern Durham 0

The Scots used a touchdown run by RJ Nicholson and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown to race out to a two-score advantage at Durham County Memorial Stadium before the game was suspended because of weather. The two teams will resume the game Monday night at 7 p.m., with 4:38 remaining in the first quarter.

#3 (West) Grimsley 56, #14 Clayton 0

The Comets had a rough go of it at the defending 4A champions, trailing 35-0 by halftime and never getting on the board.

#15 Leesville Road 18, Wakefield 8

The Pride used a receiving touchdown from Nasir Winston and a score via the ground by DJ Scott to open up the fall with a win. Leesville Road’s defense kept Wakefield off the board until running back Coleman Kraske scored for the Wolverines with just over three minutes remaining in the game.

#16 Hoggard 28, Northside (Jacksonville) 0

The Vikings were responsible for all the points in this one, and all the scoring took place in the first half. Each of Hoggard’s touchdowns came on the ground, as Sam Williams and Cayden Hollar went for two scores apiece.

#18 Clinton 41, Goldsboro 6

The Dark Horses got their season started with a touchdown off a blocked punt return and never looked back, trouncing Goldsboro. Clinton already led by 26 points by the end of the first quarter.

#23 (West) Reidsville 35, #19 Western Alamance 14

Reidsville, the defending 2A title winners, began the new season in good fashion with a 21-point home win over Western Alamance. The host Rams closed the game on a 21-7 run.

#20 Heritage 36, Holly Springs 18

Heritage’s offense wasted no time in getting off to a fast start against Holly Springs, as the Huskies led 29-0 by the end of the first quarter. The game was delayed with just over six minutes left in the third quarter because of lightning and was eventually called and made a final for that same reason. Heritage quarterback Lex Thomas threw a 20-yard touchdown on the first pass of his varsity career early on in the win.

#21 Pine Forest, 8 Jack Britt 7

An explosive play made the difference in an otherwise defensive-minded game, as Pine Forest earned an 8-7 win on the road at Jack Britt. Right after Jack Britt took its first lead of the game late in the first half, Pine Forest responded with an 88-yard connection from quarterback Aidyn Davenport to Ean Ward to take the lead back. Neither team scored in the second half.

#22 Washington 62, Pamlico County 20

The Pam Pack ended the game on a 28-0 run as they started off the year with a monster offensive performance, perhaps a sign of things to come for a group that’s returned their starting quarterback and running back from a year ago. Next up for Washington is a trip to First Flight in Kill Devil Hills.

(WEATHER DELAY) Millbrook 20, #24 Apex Friendship 14

Visiting Millbrook held a six-point lead when Friday night’s game was postponed because of weather. The two teams will resume the action on Saturday at 10 a.m.

(WEATHER DELAY, 1Q) #25 Cape Fear 2, Riverside (Durham) 0

Visiting Cape Fear used a safety to take an early lead at Riverside in Durham before the game was suspended due to weather. The game will resume on Saturday at 1 p.m.
