The Notre Dame Fighting Irish took the practice field for their second session of the spring period on Tuesday. There is no media allowed for any practice this spring, but Notre Dame has provided us with photos and video to pass along to our readers. The videos aren’t the normal type of hype footage we normally see from Notre Dame on their social accounts — as there is a lot more meat on this 3 minute bone.
Just a couple of quick thoughts today...
This is the first practice in full pads for the Irish — which doesn’t mean the day is full contact — but it was nice to see a little more grunt tossing around out there.
The video showed a much higher concentration of running plays today, and Chris Tyree really stood out. Tyree looks bigger and in total control of his body movement on the field. Whereas Kyren Williams has his distinct running style that I’m going to start calling “kamikaze,” Tyree’s is silky smooth... I’m going to call it “Panteen.”
Michael Carmody makes an appearance at center, so we can add him to the mix with Andrew Kristofic behind Zeke Correll. I’ll have a more expanded post up about center soon.
Jack Coan throws an absolutely gorgeous rainbow ball and I’m quickly falling in love with it (and maybe him). I have been impressed with Drew Pyne’s accuracy and touch so far, but I am very intrigued to see more in a full go setting where defensive linemen aren’t squatting to provide a passing lane. Buchner looks good, but not as far along as Coan and Pyne — although we won’t see much of what sets him apart from the other two... his superior running game.
Joe Wilkins continues to make a case for “that spring guy.”
Saw quite a few different tight ends in the clip today with George Takacs, Cane Berrong, and Kevin Bauman. Everyone is chasing snaps after Michael Mayer for sure, but their little clips were nice considering how much Notre Dame may still use 12 personnel this year.
Hard to get a good beat on what the defense is doing right now without pausing a half a million times. Rylie Mills did stand out, and I liked seeing NaNa Osafo-Mensah in on some action. Hoping for more on this side of the ball in the coming days. A Jack Kiser interception with Bo Bauer blocking for him down the sideline was my zen moment of the day.
I have no other blanket statements to make. Things look good, but 3 minutes of footage is still just 3 minutes of footage.
