EKU Football Coach Walt Wells Receives One-Year Contract Extension

"We firmly believe that coach Walt Wells is the right man to lead our program in our pursuit of championships."
RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University football head coach Walt Wells received a one-year contract extension, Vice President and Director of Athletics Matt Roan announced today.  The extension takes Wells' contract through the 2024 season.

"We firmly believe that coach Walt Wells is the right man to lead our program in our pursuit of championships," said Roan.  "In the face of extraordinary circumstances, our program took a significant step forward this year and we are confident we are setting it up to continue on an upward trajectory.  Coach Wells sincerely loves Eastern Kentucky University and its football program, and he has poured every bit of himself into restoring it to a level among the elite of our peers.  He has surrounded himself with an outstanding group of assistant coaches and support staff who are recruiting at a high level and who are collectively committed to the development of the young men in our program."

Wells' first season featured a nine-game fall slate.  The Colonels completed all nine games without interruption from COVID-19.  The successful completion of the fall season by the players and staff allowed the program to maintain a regular off-season recovery and conditioning schedule, and conduct a normal spring practice in preparation for the 2021 season.

The Colonels also faced one of the toughest schedules in program history during Wells' first season as head coach.  The schedule included three contests against FBS teams and two games against a team ranked among the top-25 in the FCS.  Wells led EKU to a road win at The Citadel, a near upset of FBS Troy, a victory over No. 11 Central Arkansas and a 49-17 win against Western Carolina in the 2020 Opportunity Bowl.  The win over 11th ranked UCA was the program's first victory over a ranked team since 2013 and the first win over a non-conference ranked team since 2003.

"I am honored to represent EKU and EKU Football," Wells said.  "I truly believe in the alignment of the leadership that is in place.  I appreciate the vision and support that President David McFaddin, Director of Athletics Matt Roan and Chair Lewis Diaz have shown in the football program.  EKU football has been and will always be a Matter of Pride!!"

EKU was recognized as the national team of the week three times during the 2020 season.  Quarterback Parker McKinney, wide receiver Keyion Dixon and running back Alonzo Booth each earned national player of the week honors as well.

During the fall 2020 season, Eastern ranked second in the nation in interceptions and passing efficiency, and third in first downs, passing offense, passing yards per completion, fumbles recovered and turnovers gained.

Wells is a familiar name.  He served as an assistant under legendary head coach Roy Kidd from 1997 to 2002 and was an assistant again with the Colonels in 2015.

The 2021 EKU football season begins at Western Carolina on Sept. 4.  In the first season in the ASUN Conference, the 2021 schedule will also be one of the toughest for a Colonel team.  Eastern's six games as part of the ASUN-WAC Challenge will include three against top-15 ranked teams during this past season, including two playoff squads.  EKU's five non-conference games include two more teams who were ranked at some point this season, a Missouri Valley Conference team, a Southern Conference team and the University of Louisville.

New season tickets for the 2021 campaign can be reserved now by placing a $25 deposit toward the purchase, locking in seats during the inaugural season for EKU in the ASUN Conference.  Fans can place their deposit online at EKUSports.com/FootballTix.  Renewals are currently being accepted for loyal season ticket holders with the final deadline being April 30.  Complete renewal instructions are available at EKUSports.com/Renew.  Please contact the EKU Ticket Office at tickets@eku.edu or 844-3-GOBIGE with additional questions.
