LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron is known for his high energy and intensity.
There are never any moments with Coach O that lack spunk. The man pours his soul into everything he does. Whether it’s an interview, coaching, or recruiting, Orgeron gives it his all.
So it shouldn’t be a surprise that Orgeron had a very “Coach O” reaction to Jacoby Mathews’ decision to commit to the Tigers on Friday.
Mathews is a five-star safety from Ponchatoula, LA. He spoke with Rivals after his commitment and he detailed Orgeron’s reaction.
“He (Orgeron) literally started screaming on the phone. Just screaming and laughing and clapping,” said Mathews. “To be honest, he was literally not saying nothing. He was just screaming and going crazy on the phone.”
I love this. It’s so Coach O. Just pure excitement expressed in a bunch of indiscernible noises.
This is one of the reasons that top recruits love to play for Orgeron. He’s genuine and 100 percent himself. He’s not putting on a show for recruiting purposes.
LSU Football is getting a stud in Jacoby Mathews
The reason Orgeron was so excited by Mathews’ commitment is because the Tigers are getting an absolute stud in the five-star safety.
Mathews, 6-foot-2/205 lbs, is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 safety in the country and the No. 30 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.
247Sports recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins describes Mathews as a “big-framed athlete that looks more like a linebacker than he does a safety”.
Ivins compares Mathews to former Alabama defensive back Ronnie Harrison, who was a third-round selection by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Mathews is the third five-star recruit to commit to LSU’s 2022 recruiting class, joining quarterback Walker Howard and offensive lineman WIll Campbell.
