With the No. 63 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs have selected standout Oklahoma Sooners center Creed Humphrey. After not hearing his name called during the first round, Shawnee’s favorite son (it’s not Brad Pitt, it’s Creed Humphrey!) and a noted champion of good music shouldn’t have had to wait long Friday evening. As it turns out, people chose to sleep on Creed, but the Chiefs are the beneficiary of that foolishness.
The fit is perfect.

Growing up in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Creed Humphrey spent years honing his skills on the mat as a wrestler. That training benefitted him greatly on the football field, as well. In time, the four-star recruit garnered attention from schools across the nation, but ultimately he chose to sign with his home-state Sooners.
Following a redshirt season in 2017, it didn’t take long for Humphrey to be named Oklahoma’s starting center. In 2018, he helped protect eventual Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray, and as a unit, the Sooners’ offensive line received the Joe Moore Award in recognition of that group’s collective excellence. Four of those linemen were drafted months later (Cody Ford, Dru Samia, Ben Powers and Bobby Evans), with Humphrey expected to follow in their footsteps.
In 2019, Humphrey quickly found himself as the leader of the O-line by default since he was OU’s lone returning starter from the season before. He was clearly up to the challenge, seeing as how his teammates voted for him to become a team captain. That year, he helped ease the transition of the Jalen Hurts era en route to a fifth consecutive Big 12 Championship and third straight berth in the College Football Playoff.
In his final run at Oklahoma, he continued his role as a team captain while also working on improving his pro prospects. Although the team had a rocky start to the 2020 season, other players leaned on Humphrey’s leadership for stability. Thanks to him and the other team leaders, the Sooners were able to win their last eight contests in style.
For his career, Humphrey started 37 total games, and in that span he became a two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection (2019-2020) as well as a Second Team All-American pick by the AP, FWAA, Sporting News and the Walter Camp Foundation in 2019. Additionally, and perhaps one of the more remarkable stats on his illustrious collegiate résumé is the fact that he did not allow a single sack on passing downs according to Pro Football Focus. On Dec. 31, 2020, following a blowout win over the Florida Gators in the Cotton Bowl, Humphrey announced his decision to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft.
Outside of his prowess on the football field, one of Humphrey’s greatest strengths is his ability to communicate. Whether it’s about ball or 90s bands, he’s never been the type to shy away from the spotlight or share his opinion. NFL GMs and coaches have gravitated toward Humphrey for that alone, but at the end of the day, his tape and test figures are his biggest selling points, and that’s what will primarily determine where he’ll kick-off his pro career.
