TCU Football safety Trevon Moehrig selected by the Raiders in the second round of the NFL Draft, Pick #43 - Frogs O' War

Congratulations are in order for Trevon Moehrig, the latest Horned Frog to be selected in the NFL Draft, as he kept TCU Football’s 15 year streak of having a player drafted alive when the Las Vegas Raiders selected him in the second round Friday. The 6’2 safety out of Spring Branch, TX elected to forgo his final season of eligibility at TCU to chase his pro football dreams, and it paid off as his professional career begins in the city that never sleeps.

Moehrig was an absolute star in his time at TCU; the former four star prospect first made his bones as a special teams stud in his true freshman season, starting two games (against Baylor and Oklahoma) in 2018 and all 24 over the next two seasons. He arrived on the national scene in 2019, rated by Pro Football Focus as the highest-graded safety in the FBS with the third-most valuable season in the PFF College era, allowing just two of 17 contested targets to be caught, and taking part in a team-best seven takeaways. He placed second on TCU with four interceptions and 11 pass breakups as a true sophomore.

In 2020, despite teams avoiding his side of the field at all costs, Moehrig was the recipient of the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back in addition to being named to seven All-America teams. He was also selected First-Team All-Big 12 by the conference head coaches and Associated Press for the second straight season while serving as Team Captain in every game.

His career honors include:

  • 2020 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Recipient
  • 2020 Chuck Bednarik Award Semifinalist- 2020 First-Team All-American, ESPN
  • 2020 Second-Team All-American, Walter Camp
  • 2020 Second-Team All-American, Associated Press
  • 2020 Second-Team All-American, FWAA- 2020 Second-Team All-American, AFCA
  • 2020 Second-Team All-American, Sporting News
  • 2020 Second-Team All-American, Phil Steele
  • 2020 First-Team All-Big 12
  • 2020 First-Team AP All-Big 12
  • 2019 First-Team All-Big 12
  • 2019 First-Team AP All-Big 12

Moehrig consistently wowed in the pre-draft prospect, clocking a 4.50 40-time, leaping to a 33” vertical, and hitting for 17 bench reps. But his interviews are where he really shined, as teams came away impressed with his humility, leadership, and other intangibles. Dane Brugler of The Athletic’s evaluation was, “while he is quick to trigger against both the pass and the run, he is missing an explosive finishing gear and lacks an ideal build, leading to durability concerns. Overall, Moehrig is a versatile, athletic ballhawk with the play range and anticipation to pattern-match in coverage in the mold of Jessie Bates. He projects as an immediate NFL starter (single-high or split-safety) and special-teams contributor.” NFL analyst Lance Zierlein added, “I thought he was better than both of our safeties when I studied him this summer off of 2019 tape. (TCU coach) Gary (Patterson) asks a lot of his safeties, so you know the kid is very football smart.”

With the Raiders, Moehrig has a chance to compete for an immediate starting role. Though he ended up in the second round and being the third safety drafted, he lands in a great situation, on a solid defense, and with a team on the rise. He will play for a coach that has always been enamored by Gary Patterson and TCU Football in John Gruden, and gets to play in a beautiful new stadium to boot.

And… Vegas.

CONGRATS TRE!!!
