Missouri-Kansas scheduled for four-game football series - Fulton Sun

COLUMBIA — The wait is over, and the rivalry is renewed.

Missouri and Kansas will play again in football for the first time since the Tigers left the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference, in a four-game, campus-site series.

In a release first put out by the Jayhawks, Missouri will host at Memorial Stadium in 2025 and 2031, while Kansas will host at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in 2026 and 2032.

"I'm excited for our fans to have the chance to be part of this historical rivalry again," head coach Eliah Drinkwitz said in a Missouri release. "I know there has been some time off, but I'm positive the energy and excitement will be there right away for everybody. While I haven't been part of Mizzou/KU, I have been involved in some pretty intense rivalries and I do believe that is a big part of what makes college football so special to people."

The Missouri and Kansas men's basketball teams agreed to a six-game series in October, with two campus-site games each and two games at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. The first of those games will be played Dec. 12 of this year at the Sprint Center.

"We are very excited about renewing this historic rivalry that our fans are so passionate about," Missouri athletic director Jim Sterk said in the release. "College football is better with rivalries like this, and our fans deserve to have it return. We're pleased to make this happen, and we look forward to restoring this important tradition at Mizzou."

That first meeting, Sept. 6, 2025, will be the first time the teams have played since 2011, when the Border War was the second-longest rivalry in FBS, dating back to 1891, each program's second season. The Tigers won 57 of the 120 games and tied nine times before the rivalry was suspended — Kansas still claims its win in 1960 and says the series is 56-55-9, though the Big 8 forfeited the game to Missouri — but it has since been passed by several other rivalry games.

"This agreement renews one of college football's most historic rivalries and we believe Jayhawk fans will enjoy the competition," Kansas athletic director Jeff Long said in a statement. "This will be a great experience for our students, student-athletes and fans to have the Border Showdown games on campus, and look forward to seeing that excitement at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium."

The Jayhawks will host the game on Sept. 12 in 2026 and Sept. 11 in 2032, while Missouri's 2031 game will also be held Sept. 6.

The Tigers currently have four non-conference games scheduled for the 2025 season, though the Sept. 6 date is currently open. Missouri is scheduled to host North Dakota Aug. 30, Miami (Ohio) Sept. 13 and Massachusetts Oct. 18, as well as a road game at Colorado Sept. 20. The Tigers will have two non-conference Power 5 road games in 2026, playing at Kansas Sept. 12 and at Illinois Sept. 26, and three non-conference road games in 2032, with games at KU (Sept. 11), Illinois (Sept. 18) and San Diego State (Oct. 2).

Since the start of the 2012 season, Kansas has floundered, with a 16-80 overall record in eight seasons and a maximum of three wins in a season under head coaches Charlie Weis, Clint Bowen, David Beatty and Les Miles. Missouri won the SEC East twice in its first three seasons in the conference, going 58-46 in those eight seasons, including 25-25 under former head coach Barry Odom.

In a message to donors and season-ticket holders, Sterk said Missouri is hopeful football games will be played in the fall, and that the athletic department was planning for it to be the case.

"While we don't have all of the answers today, I can tell you that we remain encouraged with the progress being made against the virus and firmly believe the Tigers will kick off as scheduled this fall," Sterk said in a letter posted Thursday.

Both season tickets and Tiger Scholarship Fund renewals are due by the end of the month. In the event of cancellations, donors have the option of having their contributions refunded fully, applied to the 2021 season, or contributed to the TSF, in part or wholly, as a donation.

Contributions to the TSF mean the Missouri athletic department is financially independent of the University of Missouri itself when it comes to scholarship funding, and those scholarship dollars are paid to the university rather than coming out of MU's own scholarship funds or endowment.

TSF raised $40.72 million to fund scholarships for 550 athletes in the 2018-19 fiscal year, the third-highest mark in program history.

Missouri added its eighth verbal commitment to the 2021 class — a group of players who may face the Jayhawks once in their college careers if they redshirt — in Darius Jackson, a three-star cornerback out of Red Oak, Texas, in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Listed at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, Jackson also held offers from Kansas, Kansas State, Washington State, Oregon State, Yale and Dartmouth, as well as the U.S. Naval and Air Force Academies.

"First off I would like to thank God for blessing me throughout this long process of recruitment," Jackson said Saturday on social media. "I would also like to thank my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for supporting me through this journey of high school. I would like to thank Coach Drinkwitz, and (defensive backs) Coach (David) Gibbs and the rest of the Missouri coaching staff for recruiting me as hard as they did!"

"They treated me like family from Day 1," he added.

Jackson is the Tigers' third commit on the defensive side of the ball, first in the secondary, and first from a state that does not border Missouri. He joins defensive linemen Travion Ford and Mekhi Wingo, quarterback Tyler Macon, tight ends Ryan Hoerstkamp and Gavin McKay, running back Taj Butts and offensive lineman Connor Tollison.
