Logan Gabriel is looking toward the future, and his physical preparations for when he arrives on the Northwestern State campus have become quite creative.
Self-designed running activities for Gabriel and his conditioning partners include charting times and distances between stop signs and other landmarks located in a rural subdivision north of Opelousas.
When it’s time to rack up and attach the weights to the bar for some serious lifting, the space available is tucked inside a neighborhood garage.
The weight room accommodation and other workout amenities that await Gabriel at NSU will certainly feature more sophistication.“Right now it’s just a matter of getting ready as I best can," said Gabriel, who gained 3,308 career yards and scored 65 touchdowns as a 215-pound ball carrier on Lafayette Christian Academy football teams that captured three successive state championships.
Originally Gabriel and the other Northwestern signees were scheduled to report to Natchitoches on June 1. But even that agenda is due to change because of the COVID-19 circumstances, Gabriel says.
"The coaches gave me a worksheet with things that I needed to do, regarding the workouts and the general strength activities that I sure be doing.
“I’m just running as best I can, going down to a certain stop sign on a street and up to Grandpa’s house and then coming back. I’m just running, lifting and getting ready for what I need to be doing,” Gabriel said.
What has been comforting during the past couple of weeks of uncertainty, Gabriel said, is being surrounded by neighborhood friends that he has acquired since he moved in with the Dupre family after being separated from his own family members, who some years ago moved to Houston.
Gabriel grew up around Ina Claire Drive in Opelousas and attended Opelousas Junior High as a seventh-grader.
It was at that point, Gabriel said, that he was provided with an opportunity to attend LCA as an eighth-grader, and the choice that he made then has made quite an impact in his life’s direction.
Gabriel eventually joined Victor and Pierre Dupre on a 2019 boys’ state championship basketball team at LCA. This past season Gabriel was part of a boys’ basketball team that reached the semifinal round.
Departing from OJHS wasn’t an easy decision, Gabriel explained. He still has friends from that experience and it’s not uncommon to exchange texts with some of those classmates he knew back then, he said.
“I really wanted to stay at OJ. Then I had the opportunity to go to LCA. We had some good teams and great athletes there. I made some great friendships and we won three championships,” said Gabriel.
One of those friendships established at LCA was with former Knights’ quarterback Zach Clement, who is already at Northwestern.
As much as Gabriel anticipates becoming part of a college football program, that’s only part of his future plan.
“The main thing that I want right now is to graduate. That’s something that is going to be especially important for me and for my family,” Gabriel said.
Gabriel said he had his choice of other schools before signing with Northwestern during the December early signing period.
Some of those other offers seemed to disappear after Gabriel experienced some difficulty overcoming a persistent hamstring injury. The interest that Northwestern had in him, Gabriel said, never wavered, and that loyalty was important when Gabriel decided it was time to announce his choice of schools.
Then during his official campus visit, Gabriel was extended some welcoming gestures from his prospective coaches and teammates.
“All of the coaches (at Northwestern) were ones that really welcomed me, even the defensive coaches. The coaches showed me that they wanted me and how they were concerned for all of their players,” said Gabriel.
Gabriel’s last high school athletic appearance came in early March.
That separation from LCA to him seems longer than that as Gabriel — like other Louisiana students — will be away from campus for the remainder of the school year.
“It’s been different. I thought going back to my house wouldn’t be that bad, but I’ve really missed being back at school and around all of my good friends and laughing with them,” Gabriel said.
