Oregon State AD says major colleges will ‘solve for football’ when it comes to financial shortfalls - OregonLive

Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes joined me on Wednesday’s radio show, where he talked a variety of subjects, including the eventual return of college football. In that, Barnes said, it’s a national conversation.

Listen to the full interview.

On pushing the football season back to spring:

“We’re speaking in hypotheticals. But certainly, I’d say this, we are going to solve for football next year, and rightly so. It funds most of our programs. Most of us nationally derive some 70-80 percent of our revenue from football. So we have to solve for football and that’s to the benefit of all sports.”

On whether students being back on campus for summer school was an indicator for if football would start on time:

“Some of the decisions that our universities have to make are high-level decisions that can’t be made quickly. We’re not nimble enough as a large, land-grant university to say, ‘We’re not going to do summer school, wait a minute the curve is flat now we ARE going to do it.' So, as an example, we’re not going to do summer school for June and July but this curve might be flattening... because of that massive move... yeah, that might mean we have student-athletes on campus.”

On the recent reported pay reduction for his staff and coaches:

“What it came down to was a chance to rally around something... there’s a unifying effect that I think this contribution has. I’m so proud of our head coaches and our exec team. Without hesitation, every single one of them raised their hand. We did it in a way that was tiered. The higher-earning with a larger percentage and the lower earning with a lower percentage.”

On where the saved funds go:

“What it comes down to is saving jobs and making sure we are absolutely delivering what we promised our students athletes... it softens the blow to any significant measures we need to take. No hesitation from any of my head coaches and I don’t know if you can say that across the country.”

On season ticket sales in football:

“As of just a few days ago our renewal rate in football season tickets was as high as it has been in five years -- five years... I think people are going to be so anxious to be back and connect."
