New Vermilion Catholic football coach feels 'fortunate' to return to alma mater - Daily Advertiser

Broc Prejean always wanted to coach at Vermilion Catholic.

Prejean is a lifelong resident of Abbeville and an alumnus of the school. He was a member of the 2003 VC team that won the 1A state championship. He’s spent the last 12 years as an assistant on St. Thomas More’s staff, but Prejean, who recently accepted the head football coaching position at the school, said the thought of coaching at his alma mater was always with him.

“Vermilion Catholic was always in the back of my mind and in my heart,” Prejean said. “I wanted to go back at some point and give back to my school. I feel like I’m ready and now the opportunity is here. I'm very fortunate they chose me.”

Prejean said he sees the move bringing positive things to his life.

“I live a half-mile from Vermilion Catholic. My whole family works together and operates a business a mile from the school. My godchild and niece both attend Mount Carmel. There are a lot of personal reasons why I felt like it was a really good fit."

The 12 years he spent at STM was the best-case scenario for a young coach just learning the ropes. He began his stint while still in college at UL and said having an opportunity to learn under legendary coaches molded him into a great coach himself.

“Shane (Savoie) has been giving me opportunities to call plays and it's been a really good situation," Prejean said. "Jim (Hightower) is the same guy 12 years later that he was the first day I met him. The message is always the same and it's always genuine.

“I pretty much lucked out. There's probably not a better place to learn how to handle things than STM. I walked in to help with football and baseball and two weeks later, I changed my major. That's kind of been the path.”

Prejean replaces Kevin Fouquier at VC, who had a successful run with the Eagles over the last two seasons. Prejean said even though he was coaching at STM, he always kept an eye on what was going on at his old school.

“I've always lived in Abbeville and been part of that community,” Prejean said. “It's a really special place for me. I transferred to Mount Carmel in seventh grade, and I just absolutely fell in love with the whole community.”

Prejean said he doesn’t plan to change much about VC’s identity football-wise. He said he thinks the program is strong and he said he hopes he can continue to build on the proud traditions he helped lay a foundation for all those years ago.

“VC is in a good place offensively," he said. “What they've been doing has been incredibly successful. It's a mirror image of the things we do at STM. I would say we're going to be very similar."
