Jaylen Anderson, Perry running back, picks West Virginia football before senior year - cleveland.com

PERRY, Ohio — Jaylen Anderson's football path will take him to West Virginia.

The junior from Perry announced Thursday night on Twitter that he is committed to the Mountaineers, picking West Virginia over nearly two dozen Division I college football programs that extended scholarship offers to him.

"I would like to thank my amazing family for helping me get to where I am today," Anderson wrote in a message with his announcement. "I would also like to thank my coaches, teammates, friends and the entire Perry community for always supporting me and pushing me to be at my best on and off the field."

Anderson is on pace to be a four-year starter at Perry, where he sets the tone as a 6-foot, 200-pound running back.

Anderson rushed for 1,086 yards and 16 touchdowns last season, helping the Pirates to an undefeated regular season and Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division championship. He had another 883 yards and 11 TDs on 51 receptions in the passing game, helping quarterback Drew Schiano to 3,296-yard passing season.

Perry finished 12-1 and reached the OHSAA Division IV regional finals before a 17-13 loss to Poland Seminary.

Anderson earned first-team All-Ohio honors last season for his play.

In his career, Anderson has 2,642 yards rushing with 34 TDs. He is averaging 8.5 yards per carry on 308 attempts in his career. He also has another 1,642 yards and 29 TDs on 108 career receptions.

Boston College, Duke, Florida and Kentucky were among his top offers. A handful of Big Ten schools, including Iowa, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota and Nebraska, also offered scholarships.

In West Virginia, Anderson picked a program that is coming off a 5-7 season and finished 3-6 in the Big 12 for first-year coach Neal Brown.

Anderson is ranked as the No. 22 running back in the country for the Class of 2021, according to 247Sports.com, which also has him as the No. 11 prospect in Ohio.
