Daily Buzz: Best Florida football game of the decade? - 247Sports

The Swamp247 staff has been discussing some of the top topics surrounding Florida football team with spring football canceled and not much else to do.

We'll keep the intro short here so we can get straight into a really fun topic to discuss.

Today we asked our staff what the best Florida football game of the past decade was, dating back to the start of the 2010 season. Here were our answers:
___________

Blake Alderman's Take: There are quite a few games that come to mind that were great games over the last decade. Florida has had plenty of close games and big time performances over the last decade as well. I kept finding myself going back to this past seasons win at home over the Auburn Tigers. It had the makings of a big time game for UF. Both teams entered undefeated with College Gameday in town and the Gators were a big underdog. The Swamp showed signs of the past with how loud it was from start to finish and it may have been the loudest game in Gainesville of the whole decade. Florida won in front of a packed house and a packed recruiting section. The town was buzzing well past the final whistle and there were so many flashes of campus being like what it was when UF was on top of the college football world.
___________

Bob Redman's Take: I think the best game for me had to do with more than just the game itself, yet the game was outstanding if more of a defensive effort.

The game was set up to be a major grudge match when Hurricane Matthew caused the Florida-LSU game to be postponed even though LSU athletic director Joe Alleva offered to play the game in Baton Rouge the day it was originally scheduled. Logistically it couldn’t happen with the chance of disaster getting the equipment on the road and the whole Florida entourage flying out and back into Florida. Alleva wouldn’t budge with playing the game later in Gainesville. So both teams gave up a game and Florida relented to playing the game in Baton Rouge.

So the scene was set for a slobber-knocker of a game with both teams having smack talked via social media for weeks leading up to the makeup contest. A defensive battle is what we got with both teams scoring a single touchdown each and Florida winning the field goal battle behind Eddy Pineiro who kicked three field goals to just one for LSU. The highlight offensive play was a 98-yard touchdown pass from Austin Appleby to Tyrie Cleveland. But fittingly, the game was won on a goal-line stand by the Florida defense. LSU drove 68 yards and had first and goal from the 7-yard line. Running back Derrius Guice got two yards on first down and Florida called a timeout. He got four yards to the 1-yard line and LSU called a timeout with :24 on the clock. Fullback John David Moore was stuffed by CeCe Jefferson on third down and got nothing and LSU called another timeout. Finally Guice took a handoff deep and Taven Bryan forced a fumble as Guice dove and Foster Moreau was buried with the ball in the pile short of the goal line. The Gators won 16-10.
___________

Thomas Goldkamp's Take: There are a handful of games to pick from here, and which you pick probably depends most on what you value. If you're a defensive guy, 2012 LSU or 2016 LSU were both instant classics. If you like drama, the only overtime game in the history of the Florida-Georgia rivalry in 2010 is a good pick. If you want a return to the glory days of the Swamp from start to finish, hard to top Auburn in 2019.

But I'll go with some kind of combination of those: 2018 LSU. The Gators' rivalry with the Tigers had been amped up considerably in the wake of Hurricane Matthew and the drama that unfolded in the rivalry in 2016. It was Dan Mullen's first year in Gainesville, and Florida was fresh off a win over a ranked Mississippi State team on the road.

In comes No. 5 LSU, with Florida riding some momentum. After a back-and-forth game, LSU scored early in the fourth quarter to take the lead. But Florida surged in fourth quarter as the Swamp roared, taking a one-point lead on a touchdown run by Lamical Perine. With less than two minutes to go and LSU attempting to put together a comeback drive, a pick-six by safety Brad Stewart gave the Gators their first gargantuan win under Mullen and a fresh foundation to build on in the first year of his tenure.

(Games I considered: 2010 Georgia, 2012 LSU, 2012 Florida State, 2015 Ole Miss, 2016 LSU, 2018 Mississippi State, 2018 LSU, 2018 Florida State, 2019 Auburn)
