Anthony Fallon named football coach at Canton - Boston Herald

Anthony Fallon’s football coaching journey spanning nearly 30 years has featured numerous stops along the way.

But the veteran coach has always been drawn back to Canton, and that’s where Fallon, a 1988 graduate of the school, will get his first head coaching opportunity this fall.

After serving as an offensive coordinator for the Bulldogs last season, Fallon is ecstatic to take the reins of the program after former coach Dave Bohane retired in January.

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Fallon, who had two previous assistant coaching stints with the Bulldogs. “I’ve been coaching for a long time, and my first time being a head coach at my alma mater is quite unbelievable.”

Fallon added: “It seems at every turn I always end up going back. That’s where I learned the game and grew up loving the game. … It was always circumstances that brought me away, but circumstances that always brought me back.”

Fallon is well-versed in Canton tradition. He played on Canton’s last team to make a Super Bowl appearance in 1987 before continuing his football career at Bridgewater State College. Fallon then embarked on a coaching odyssey that began as the Bulldogs’ freshman coach under Bohane in 1994 and after five years, he made a pit stop at Bellingham.

A hiatus from coaching followed, in which Fallon became a board certified football official and spent more time with his wife, Darcy, along with his two kids, Kiley and Thomas, but he got the itch to get back on the sideline and rejoined the Canton staff in 2011. Fallon didn’t stay for long, heading to Milford for a year and then coached at Millis for four seasons, serving as the defensive coordinator in the Mohawks’ 2016 state title run.

Fallon plans to mesh all the knowledge he gained from his various coaching sojourns with the customs of Canton football.

“I’ve been able to bring some of the things that I’ve learned away from Canton to Canton,” Fallon said. “I plan on bringing all my experience, as well as the traditions of Canton, to the program.”

Fallon, who teaches physical education at Millis High, inherits a program that is coming off of back-to-back Division 5 South final appearances and an outright Hockomock League Davenport title in 2019.

Fallon’s predecessor believes he is the perfect fit for the job and despite having to replace 20 graduating seniors, will maintain that level of previous success.

“He’s got a good feel for all things Canton football regarding alumni and the current roster,” Bohane said. “I couldn’t be happier for him. I feel like he did everything the right way. … He’s paid his dues.”

And Fallon’s ready for this to be a permanent stay.

“I’m prepared for this to be my final coaching stop,” Fallon said.
