UAB releases 2020 football schedule - AL.com

The Conference USA league office released schedules for the upcoming 2020 football season today and the UAB football team is set for three new faces, along with every conference opponent from last season.

The Blazers are coming off a 9-5 season that includes a second straight C-USA west division title and third consecutive bowl appearance. Under the direction of head coach Bill Clark, the program has been bowl eligible every year during his four seasons and won at least eight games in the past three seasons.

UAB opens the season Thursday, Sept. 3, at Legion Field against New Mexico State, a former Sun Belt Conference member that reverted back to independent status in 2018. The Aggies went 2-10 during the 2019 season and make their second trip to the state within a calendar year after suffering a 62-10 loss at Alabama.

The Blazers host in-state SWAC opponent Alabama A&M the following Saturday, Sept. 12, at Legion Field. The Blazers own a 2-0 record against the Bulldogs and returned to the field in 2017 with a 38-7 win over Alabama A&M.

Instead of facing an SEC power in November, the Blazers head to South Beach early for a Sept. 19 matchup with the Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The Hurricanes were the only team in 2019 to be shutout in the postseason and lost three straight to end the season, including losses to C-USA opponents FIU and Louisiana Tech.

Rounding out the non-conference slate is a return trip to South Alabama, Sept. 26, after defeating the Jaguars last season, 35-3, at Legion Field. The Blazers are the second opponent that South Alabama will host in its new on-campus facility, Hancock Whitney Stadium.

Following the quick trip to Mobile, the Blazers’ conference schedule begins with two home games against UTSA, Oct. 3, and Western Kentucky, Oct. 17, that bookend a visit to Rice on Oct. 10. The Blazers are 6-0 against the Owls and Roadrunners since returning in 2017 but dropped a 20-13 road decision to the Hilltoppers last season.

UAB’s only bye week of the season occurs the week of Oct. 24, following the Western Kentucky contest.

After the bye week, UAB hits the road against Louisiana Tech, Oct. 31, and against Old Dominion on Nov. 7, before returning home, Nov. 14, to face the North Texas Mean Green. The final road contest of the season is Nov. 21 at UTEP and the Blazers close out its reign at Legion Field, Nov. 28, against rival Southern Miss.

The Conference USA Championship Game is set for Dec. 5 and hosted by the team with the highest C-USA winning percentage.
