Ohio State president says 'there's a path to football' in fall - 247Sports

As the college football season gets closer and closer with three of the Power Five leagues still set to play, discussion regarding the Big Ten and Pac-12's decisions to postpone their season until the spring continues on. Many players, coaches and fans have voiced frustration with the postponement, and that hasn't slowed down now that we're a couple of weeks removed from when the decisions were made.

So is it possible that the Big Ten will reverse its decision and play football in the fall? Ohio State president Dr. Kristina Johnson answered that question in an interview with WCMH-TV in Columbus, Ohio.

“Well, fall is a long time period of time, right? Fall goes until Dec. 20, so I’m hoping — yeah, I see that there’s a path to football," Johnson said. "People talk about winter, early spring, late fall, winter, those things are all being worked out. Again, I come back to our campuses need to be safe, and that means in the performances as well as in the classrooms. We’re working very hard to do that, and if we all do our part, wear a mask, stay six feet apart, wash our hands, then I think that we’ve got the procedures in place to go forward.”

Dan Patrick reported on Tuesday that the Big Ten is hoping to get new COVID-19 safety and testing protocols in place to start the season on Oct. 10, but multiple national reporters as well as Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos shot down that idea.

Of course, much discussion has surrounded the Big Ten presidents' vote last month to postpone the season and who voted in which direction as well as what the final tally was. Johnson confirmed that she voted to play the season and explained her vote.

“It came out yesterday of course how I voted," Johnson said. "That’s no secret — I voted not to postpone. I think the kids of things we’ve learned about how what’s called a clean field — players on the field that are negative, that can play, that we can be playing football. We’re working through that process, we’re working with the Big Ten, we’re working with the commissioner to try and get in place those sort of medical protocols where we can keep our students safe, and that’s really what it comes down to. We want to make sure that our athletes get a shot, because they’ve worked really hard and they deserve a shot to play. At the same time, we want to make sure that they’re safe. So we’re doing our work, we’ll come back and I’m very hopeful that we’ll be playing football this fall.

“... We have several subcommittees — that was announced by the Big Ten. There’s a medical subcommittee, there’s a scheduling subcommittee, and these committees are working through very diligently every day about how to put in place those protocols that will keep it safe. So as soon as possible. Certainly something we’ll be watching with the commissioner and integrating obviously our views and those of our colleagues.”
