GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- After more than a month and a half without a positive COVID-19 case on the football team, Florida has recorded another case, the 22nd for the team since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Florida reported its latest coronavirus testing numbers on Wednesday, indicating that one football player has tested positive in the month of September.
The Gators had not had a positive coronavirus test result since mandatory workouts began on July 14 until the latest round of testing. The Gators had been COVID-19 free in fall camp on a total of 459 tests for the football team as of last week's update.
However, with a positive case now, Florida will likely have to deal with some of the issues that other teams in the league have faced thanks to contact tracing that will likely force quarantine for other players exposed to the positive case.
Ole Miss, UF's season opening opponent, had 27 players miss their most recent scrimmage due to the virus or injury. Meanwhile, Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt noted recently that his team might only get 20 to 22 of the allowable 25 practices in after 44 players were quarantined when the Vols were supposed to host a scrimmage this weekend, forcing the team to turn the scrimmage into a regular practice instead.
Florida, though, should be relatively safe on the number of practices.
The Gators intentionally front-loaded the first half of fall camp with practices, knowing that they were coronavirus free at the time. That allowed UF to get the bulk of its work in, completing the install period of camp and finishing off the second and final scrimmage of camp on Monday.
Florida is actually scheduled to decelerate a bit in the next week, so as timing of COVID-19 cases go, the latest positive result isn't awful.
"We kind of planned it out that we’ve been pretty physical up to this point," coach Dan Mullen said. "We’re going to get into a little bit more of lighter (work), but that’s going to involve a little bit more conditioning, running, lifting and some of the stuff that we’ve missed.
"With all the limitations put on us, some of the conditioning and lifting is one of the biggest things they eliminated by going to the 20-hour week and all that stuff. When the SEC came out with whatever their rules were, the things that got eliminated were some of the conditioning and lifting. So we’re trying to catch up on some of that over the next two weeks and just make sure we’re ready for four quarters, but a lot of that, also too, is around depth and make sure we’re creating the proper depth for four quarters."
Florida's latest coronavirus testing numbers indicate the program has flagged seven positive cases in the month of September among student-athletes, including the one football player.
The Gators have issued 191 total tests in the month of September, with 101 of those tests for the football team. All results are based on testing available since Sept. 7.
In total, Florida has issued 1,227 total tests since student-athletes returned to campus on May 26, returning 42 total positives, including 22 for the football team.
