A high number of injuries to members of its varsity football team has prompted Adrian to cancel its game against Chelsea, which was scheduled for Friday.
Adrian tweeted the news out via its athletics account on Wednesday afternoon, citing an inability to have enough players ready to play this week.
“As a result of a high number of student injuries on the varsity football team, we are not able to compete at Friday night’s game,” the tweet read.
Adrian athletic director Andrew Mains said varsity head coach Chris Gilliam reached out to him earlier this week with concerns about the team being able to have enough players to play Friday.
Mains added the program was also unwilling to have freshmen players move up to the varsity level just to play this week and instead decided to cancel altogether.
“This was not an easy decision for our head coach or administrative team, but it was in the best interest of the Adrian football program,” Mains said in an email to MLive Wednesday night.
Adrian also made it an emphasis to include in the social media message that the decision to cancel the game was not COVID-19 related and that the team hopes to play next Friday against Jackson.
The Maples have struggled the past few seasons going 0-9 in 2018 and 2019 and opened the 2020 season 0-2 being outscored 96-19 by opponents.
Chelsea athletic director Brad Bush said there would be attempt to find an opponent for the Bulldogs to play against on Friday.
Chelsea (2-0) was looking for its 12th consecutive Southeastern Conference White win and is scheduled to face SEC-White foe Pinckney next week.
