Howze twins have UB football seeing double for 2021 - Buffalo News

Quillen and Jaillen Howze didn’t plan to go to college together. But as they went through their junior year of high school football in Michigan, they realized that even though different schools were recruiting them, they wanted to share the experience of playing college football.

“We had that discussion and we talked about that, but then we thought, ‘Why not?’” Jaillen Howze said. “We had significant differences in (scholarship) offers, and that limited things. But we said we’re going to keep playing together and we’re going to go to a place that’s going to help us as individuals.”

Tuesday night, the Howzes announced that they had verbally committed to the University at Buffalo’s 2021 freshman recruiting class. The Howzes are the first players to commit to UB’s 2021 class, and they are about to complete their junior years at Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Township, Mich., about 30 miles northeast of Detroit.

“UB wanted my brother and I for who we were, and not just as a package deal,” Quillen Howze said. “I had offers from Power Five schools, but Buffalo was the only school where we were going to go together.”

The Howzes plan to sign with UB in November, but have not yet visited UB’s campus. Jaillen said they plan to visit in the fall for a football weekend, while Quillen wants to visit campus “as soon as it opens up.”

Per NCAA guidelines, college coaches cannot comment on recruits until they have signed a national letter of intent.

247Sports ranks Quillen Howze as a 3-star recruit and the No. 26 prospect in Michigan. He played cornerback, wide receiver and kickoff returner. He had 22 tackles, including four tackles for loss, one interception and 10 pass breakups on defense; 29 receptions for 377 yards and two touchdowns on offense; and three kickoff returns for 51 yards on special teams, per MLive.com.

He expects to play cornerback for the Bulls.

“I think it’s going to be a good fit because of my size,” said Quillen, who is 6-feet, 185 pounds. “Receivers are getting bigger, so they need bigger corners. I do a little bit of everything, too. I’m physical, fast and explosive.”

Jaillen Howze also is a 3-star recruit on 247Sports, and he is the No. 50 prospect in Michigan. He played primarily at outside linebacker at Chippewa Valley, but played in only five games in 2019 because of a dislocated shoulder, which he sustained about a month into the season. He had 32 tackles, six tackles for loss and two forced fumbles last season, per MLive.com.

Jaillen, who is 6-1 and 215 pounds, said he will join the Bulls as a linebacker.

“I’m very passionate about the game, and I respect the game,” said Jaillen, who plans to study business. “I’m very much a team player, and I’ve based a lot of my friendships and my work ethic off football. I’m also very competitive. Me and my brother are both very competitive and we both want to be the best of who we are and where we’re at.”

The Howzes are identical twins, and they would be the second set of twins on the UB football team, provided Jaret and James Patterson both choose to stay for their final season of eligibility in 2021.

It wouldn't be the first time the Howzes are on a team with multiple sets of twins. Jaillen said they are one of two sets of twins on the Chippewa Valley football team.

The Howzes corresponded with the Pattersons over the past few months as they were considering college programs, including UB, Michigan State and Toledo.

“They talked to us about how the program helped them and how it shaped them as young men and as athletes,” Jaillen said.

“Everybody’s going to expect us to be just as outstanding as the Pattersons, and we have a high standard for ourselves, which isn’t a bad thing at all.”

Quillen, who plans to study robotic engineering, agreed.

“I think it’s something where we can look up to them, because they've been there. They’ve played at UB for two years and have a good idea of what to do, to be successful.”
