Alabama Receives: EDGE Jaelan Phillips, S Gurvan Hall

Miami Receives: ILB Joshua McMillon, OT Tommy Brown, WR Xavier Williams

The Crimson Tide enter the 2020 season lighter than usual on the edge and upfront: Terrell Lewis and Anfernee Jennings are off to the NFL and former top signees Eyabi Anoma and Antonio Alfano didn’t last long in Tuscaloosa. So it makes sense that BamaOnLine’s Charlie Potter wanted a proven, talented edge-rusher, and in landing Miami’s Jaelan Phillips, he might have hit the lottery.

Phillips, the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2017, enjoyed a strong freshman season at UCLA (3.5), slumped in part because of injuries as a sophomore and transferred to Miami to get his career back on track. In a handful of spring practices, Hurricanes coaches raved about the work Philips had done in his redshirt season.

The Tide also received a potential plug-and-play safety in Gurvan Hall, who started 11 games last season and ranked second on the team with 66 tackles.

For all this, the Tide (with Potter pulling the strings) agreed to tap into its two biggest sources of depth: Linebacker and offensive line, while throwing in a receiver Miami was asking for. Senior linebacker Joshua McMillon is the biggest hit, but the Tide will be just fine starting Dylan Moses and Christian Harris. Brown and Williams were each top-150 recruits.

Barton's Grade for Alabama: A+

Says Barton: “Nick Saban wins again. McMillon, Brown and Williams are all good players but Alabama has recruited better. Meanwhile Phillips and Hall are big additions.”

MIAMI'S JUSTIFICATION ...

The giveaway of Phillips, who the Hurricanes have high hopes for, is bound to draw a reaction, but InsideTheU writer Gaby Urrutia was definitely not going to give up Gregory Rousseau (15.5 sacks) or Temple transfer Quincy Roche (13) to get what he wanted here. The Canes still might have the best pair of defensive ends in the country.

Hall is a loss, too, but Miami has depth at safety. In this trade, the Hurricanes were looking to both build for the future while getting better immediately, hence the acquisition of McMillon, who will be a Day 1 starter after the graduation of four-year starters Shaq Quarterman and Michael Pinckney. The 6-foot-7 Brown is a big, promising piece for a team that listed offensive line as its biggest need. He and Williams will both be redshirt sophomores.

Speaking of Williams: Miami was eager to reel him back to South Florida, where he was a back-to-back state champion at Chaminade-Madonna Prep. The hope is Williams will fortify UM’s receiver room immediately and grow into a star.

Barton's Grade for Miami: D

Says Barton: “OK, I will grant you that Miami has chips to play with because of edge and safety depth but you just didn't get back enough here. You dealt away two guys that could make significant impacts on a national title contender for three guys that will be lucky to start for a team that went 6-7 last year.”
