Herm Edwards has concerns over delayed college football season - 247Sports

The college football season may come into question due to the coronavirus pandemic. As college athletics and pro sports were canceled and put on hiatus for the time being, college football officials are preparing contingency plans for multiple scenarios regarding the upcoming 2020 season.

Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards isn’t so sure it’s going to be an easy adjustment if the season is delayed or split over two semesters during the school year. One of the big things the coach is concerned over is the lasting presence of the virus.

Edwards joined Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on Mad Dog Radio on Sirius XM on Friday to discuss what it would be like for players playing under different circumstances during the college football season.

“Like anything else, I think some would be (hesitant),” Edwards said. “We say college athletes, but remember, it's not only them, it's their parents. Would their parents approve them of playing? They're not professional athletes now. They're college athletes, they are student athletes. Will their parents allow them to come back and play if they don’t feel it’s safe. I'm not going to argue with a parent? No one’s talking about that.”

Russo asked Edwards about a potential season scenario of the season splitting up and picking up in February, thus creating the possibility of players playing two seasons in one calendar year.

“I've heard that too,” Edwards said. “What comes to mind right away is there's a lot of moving parts in that. Television, hotels, travel, a lot of things that have been done ahead of time. If you do that...basically it's a pro season for college kids. You're putting two seasons into one. Let's say you play 12 games and you turn right around that same year and play another 12. That's 24 games. That's the NFL. That's 3 preseason games, 17 regular games and if you get in the plus playoffs, that’s 23-24 games, you're asking young people to do this. They’ve never done that. Don’t forget that now.”

ESPN college football broadcaster Chris Fowler also shared sentiments of concern for a late start to the season.

“One of the negatives, people think is if you play into the Spring, it’s very hard to ask players to turn around and play in the Fall of 21,” Fowler said. “That's a legitimate concern. That might dictate when they want to start. You'd want to have it wrapped up by lets say early May. A lot of coaches think...Summer of 21 would feel weird but you'd get them ready for a Fall season. One big (thing) from coaches who hate the idea of playing in the Spring are worried about is this: top players sitting it out. Player evaluation would be really strange. But maybe not bad in a Spring situation. If the NFL season is over you could scout the college games in person over the Spring, combine goes away, draft gets pushed back to the end of the season, would these top stars sit out? Trevor Lawrence and these guys who are guaranteed top round draft picks, you're shouting in their ear to not play. A lot of coaches are worried about that. Others say, not many would sit out. It’d be like the bowl games, not many would sit out. I just wonder about that.

“It's not a bowl game, exhibition game, it's a whole season compressed up against NFL training camps and your rookie season. You can make a legitimate case that wouldn't be very sound. You have to believe some guys would say, hey this doesn't make sense to me. That would certainly mar the season but nothing is going to be easy about any of this. That's one concern about playing in the Spring for sure.”
