The standard for excellence in college football for a decade-plus, it's easier to ascend the mountain than maintain your stay at its pinnacle according to Alabama coach Nick Saban, winner of six national titles, including six with the Crimson Tide.
"To me, we kind of have the Alabama factor around here that has always helped us be successful," Saban said last spring. "That’s having a team that plays with a lot of discipline, that’s having a team that everybody sort of is responsible and accountable to do their job at a high level and a standard and everybody puts the team first. So, that’s the standard.
"It’s up to the individual players to do that. And if I thought that we weren’t doing that in one game or 10 games, I would address it with the players and make sure that everybody was on board with those principles and values that’s helped us be successful."
Synonymous with greatness, coaching legends who have defined college football's programs glory years often leave their respective programs in better shape than they found it, paving the way for many years of success and Saban has certainly kept Alabama on elite footing for when that day comes.
It doesn't always happen that way, but it's no surprise that some of the nation's most recognizable schools over the past half-century is a result of being sculpted by Hall of Fame leaders on the sideline who stand among the all-time greats in the sport's rich history. When you think of college football's best programs, there's a dozen or so traditional powers that come to mind, teams you know will be competitive year in and year out.
