EAST LANSING – In a span of less than two weeks, Michigan State football’s head coach addressed the Breslin Center crowd twice during a basketball game.
Mark Dantonio went first on Feb. 4, the same day he announced his retirement, and thanked the fans while declaring himself a Spartan for life.
Next up was his replacement.
Mel Tucker, who was named the new head coach on Wednesday, was introduced to the Breslin Center crowd early in the first half of Saturday night’s game against Maryland. He did so wearing a Michigan State basketball throwback jersey the Spartans were using against Maryland while honoring the 20th anniversary of the 2000 national championship team.
“Hello Spartans,” Tucker told the Breslin Center crowd after receiving a standing ovation. “It’s good to be back home. I’m happy to be back home where it all began for me. Thank you so much. Thank you for the support that you have given me and my family, we really appreciate it.
“I can promise you one thing, our football team will be relentless. We have work to do, we’ve got something to prove. We’re going to get it done, I promise you that. Go green.”
Tucker, who was a graduate assistant with the Spartans from 1997-98, was named Michigan State’s 25th head coach on Wednesday and replaced Dantonio, who departed after 13 seasons and becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach. He’s had a busy first four days on the job.
After flying in from Colorado on Wednesday, Tucker had his first meeting with the team, was approved by the Board of Trustees and that was followed by an introductory press conference. Tucker performed the ceremonial puck drop before Michigan State’s hockey game against Michigan on Friday night at Munn Arena and met with ESPN’s College Gameday crew on Saturday morning at the Breslin Center.
Tucker also started building his assistant coaching staff as the program announced on Saturday that Mike Tressel and Ron Burton will remain with the program.
