SEC Football by the Numbers: Top 10 from the 2019 season - AL.com

The SEC’s 87th football season produced another national championship and Heisman Trophy for the conference, as well as some of the most prolific offensive performances in the league’s history. LSU QB Joe Burrow went on a record-breaking spree on his way to the Heisman, so much so that he has an “SEC Football by the Numbers: Top 10” devoted solely to his exploits to leave room for other performances in the end-of-the-season top 10:

3 Consecutive Missouri games included TDs scored by LB Cale Garrett. Garrett returned an interception 27 yards for a TD in a 50-0 victory over Southeast Missouri State on Sept. 14, recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD in a 34-14 victory over South Carolina on Sept. 21 and returned an interception 33 yards for a TD in a 42-10 victory over Troy on Oct. 5. Garrett's TD against Troy came after he'd returned his first interception in the game to the Trojans 1-yard line. Garrett also scored his TD against Troy after he'd sustained a torn pectoral tendon earlier in the contest, and the injury caused him to miss the remainder of the season.

4 Consecutive seasons have featured an SEC player as the nation's top punter after Kentucky's Max Duffy averaged 48.1 yards per punt in 2019. He followed Florida's Johnny Townsend in 2016 and 2017 and Texas A&M's Braden Mann in 2018 as the nation's leading punter. Duffy ended the season with a career average of 46.3 yards on 109 punts, which is better than the SEC career record entering the 2019 season of 46.2 (for players with at least 100 career punts) established by Townsend. However, Duffy is not the conference career record-holder. Mann completed his career at Texas A&M with an average of 48.9 yards per punt.

5 Consecutive Arkansas games featured at least 45 points for the Razorbacks' opponent, the longest such streak in SEC history by two games. Arkansas lost to Auburn 51-10, Alabama 48-7, Mississippi State 54-24, Western Kentucky 45-19 and LSU 56-20 before ending the season with a 24-14 setback against Missouri. Before Arkansas' streak, Mississippi State in 1969 and Vanderbilt in 1990 were the only SEC teams that had yielded 45 or more points in three consecutive games.

16 Consecutive victories for LSU, the longest current winning streak in the nation, with half the wins coming against teams ranked in the top 10 of The Associated Press Poll at the time of the game. The Tigers' winning streak started when they defeated No. 7 Central Florida 40-32 in the Fiesta Bowl to close the 2018 season by ending the Knights' 25-game winning streak, the longest in the nation at the time. LSU closed the 2019 season by beating No. 3 Clemson 42-25 in the CFP national championship game to end a 29-game winning streak, the longest in the nation at the time. During 2019, LSU became the first team to beat more than five top-10 opponents in one season. In addition to Clemson, LSU defeated No. 9 Texas 45-38 on Sept. 7, No. 7 Florida 42-28 on Oct. 12, No. 9 Auburn 23-20 on Oct. 26, No. 2 Alabama 46-41 on Nov. 9, No. 4 Georgia 37-10 on Dec. 7 and No. 4 Oklahoma 63-28 on Dec. 28. LSU was ranked No. 6 in the AP preseason poll and beat the top four in those rankings -- Clemson, Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma -- in 2019.

31 Consecutive home games were won by Alabama before the Crimson Tide fell to LSU 46-41 in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 9. In its previous game, Alabama had beaten Arkansas 48-7 on Oct. 26 to establish an SEC record for consecutive home wins. Alabama surpassed a 30-game home winning streak achieved by Florida between a 36-33 loss to Auburn on Oct. 15, 1994, and a 40-39 loss to Alabama on Oct. 2, 1999. The Crimson Tide's streak started after a 43-37 defeat by Ole Miss on Sept. 19, 2015.

57 Of the 60 quarters played by LSU this season featured points for the Tigers. LSU scored in every quarter of its first six and last six games. In between, the Tigers took a zero in the fourth quarter against Mississippi State on Oct. 19, the first quarter against Auburn on Oct. 26 and the third quarter against Alabama on Nov. 9. All that scoring added up to 726 points as LSU broke the NCAA FBS single-season record of 723 points by Florida State in 2013 and the SEC record of 684 by Alabama in 2018. With an average of 48.4 points per game, LSU in 2019 became the third SEC team to lead the nation in scoring average, joining 1946 Georgia and 1996 Florida. With 8,526 yards, LSU also broke the NCAA FBS single-season record for total offense, which had been 8,387 yards by Houston in 201, and the SEC record of 7,830 by Alabama in 2018. With an average of 568.4 yards per game, LSU in 2019 became the third SEC team to lead the team in total offense, joining 1942 Georgia and 1961 Ole Miss.

200 Consecutive extra-point attempts were made by Georgia PK Rodrigo Blankenship to set the SEC record. Blankenship made two PATS in Georgia's 26-14 victory over Baylor in the Sugar Bowl to break the conference record set by Auburn's Daniel Carlson with 198 in a row from 2014 through 2017. Carlson's streak was part of the longest by a team in NCAA FBS history. Auburn's streak reached 304 in a row -- beating the mark of 302 straight established by Florida State from 2012 through 2016 -- before Anders Carlson missed an extra-point attempt on Oct. 19 against Arkansas. It was the Tigers' first miss on a PAT since Nov. 9, 2013. Georgia owns the longest active streak of successful extra points at 292.

1,468 Rushing yards for Kentucky QB Lynn Bowden Jr. this season, the most in the SEC in 2019 even though he spent the first five games playing wide receiver. Bowden moved to quarterback after the Wildcats' top two signal-callers went down with injuries, and he ran for at least 110 yards in each of the remaining eight games except for a 99-yard outing against Georgia in his second outing at QB. Bowden closed 2019 by running for 284 yards, an SEC record for a quarterback, in a 45-13 victory over Louisville in the regular-season finale and 233 yards, an NCAA bowl record for a quarterback, in a 37-30 victory over Virginia Tech in the Belk Bowl. Bowden came up 5 yards short of the SEC single-season record for QB rushing yards of 1,473, established by Auburn's Cam Newton in 2010.

1,780 Receiving yards and 20 TD receptions for LSU WR Ja'Marr Chase, with both figures leading the nation and setting SEC single-season records. Chase surpassed the conference single-season record for receiving yards of 1,740 established by LSU WR Josh Reed in 2001. He broke the SEC single-season record for TD receptions set by Florida WR Reidel Anthony in 1996. Eight of Chase's TD catches covered at least 50 yards, giving him two more such scores than any other NCAA FBS player had ever had in one season. With an average gain of 21.2 yards on his 84 catches in 2019, Chase also broke the SEC single-season records for players with at least 50 receptions, which had been 20.5 yards by LSU WR Eric Martin on 52 catches in 1983, and for players with at least 75 receptions, which had been 18.5 yards by Reed on 94 receptions in 2001.

3,045 Receiving yards for WR Bryan Edwards in his four seasons at South Carolina, the fourth-most in SEC history. Edwards became the sixth player in league history to reach 3,000 yards even though he never had 1,000 receiving yards in a season. His top output was 846 in 2018. He had 590 as a freshman, 793 as a sophomore and 816 as a senior in 2019. The next-highest player on the SEC's list of receiving-yards leaders who didn't have at least one 1,000-yard season is 12th-place Fred Gibson, who accumulated 2,884 receiving yards at Georgia from 2001 through 2004. In his top season, Gibson produced 801 yards as a senior.
