Purdue Football: 5 Offensive Predictions - Hammer and Rails

The Purdue offense.

Much more productive than the defense in years past.

But. yet, still struggling at times.

The back to back bowl appearances seem like a decade ago at this point, but, is there any chance we can get back to one this year with the 10th toughest strength of schedule this season?

If these 5 things happen, I could see a bowl birth on the horizon.

  1. The Running Game Gets Back on Track - It is no coincidence. During the best two years of the Brohm Era, we had a solid running game. Lead by Markell Jones and DJ Knox, the two combined for over 1K yards in back to back years. In order to get back on track, we will need similar production. I wouldn’t expect to come from just one guy either. After a down year, King Doerue needs to get going again to pair up with former walk-on Zander Horvath. There has been positive remarks about UNLV transfer Dylan Downing as well. Sampson James just transferred over, but there has to be a waiver passed for he to become eligible.
  2. The Offensive Line Improves - Coming into this year, I saw 8 guys that could play for Coach Brohm this year on the offensive line. After 3 off-season retirements, I have no idea what the two deep will look like. I do know that Gus Hartwig is a future NFL player. Tyler Witt will bring some more stability to the interior offensive line as a transfer from WKU. Greg Long is back for one more season after a good first year with the Boilers. If Cam Craig is healthy - he will be a starter.
  3. There is a Quarterback, ahead of the pack and remains the starter all season - I just want one season where we know who will be the starting quarterback is coming into the year because he was so good the year before. We haven’t had that during the Brohm era, mostly due to injuries. Well, that and no one pulling away. I like Jack Plummer at QB the most and I think he wins the QB job. He has been injured in the past, so I am not sure if he stays healthy for a 12 game slate.
  4. David Bell Does David Bell Things - The future first round pick has been dominant in his first two years at Purdue. Anything less than 12 targets per game is robbery for a player as talented as him. He was on his way to a 1,000 yard season last year as well if we played an entire schedule. I think we will see 80 catches and 1,200 yards this year.
  5. A 3rd Option in the Passing Game Emerges - We have David Bell and Milton Wright as a 1-2 punch. But, who is 3rd? Can Jackson Anthrop be the guy out of the slot? Payne Durham at Tight End? Broc Thompson, the transfer, has had a great camp, maybe he emerges. We need a solid 3rd option to always be open when those top twos guys get double covered.
