YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – When the Eastern Michigan University football team took to the gray turf inside Rynearson Stadium for its first official practice of the 2021 campaign today, Aug. 5, it did so in preparation of a full, 12-game schedule for the first time in over 63 million seconds, which equates to 735 days.
If there is one sentiment that every college football coach will agree upon, it's that every second counts, and that was certainly the feeling from all members of the program today.
"When you think about what we're out here doing, I mean really think about it, think about how amazing it is," eighth year Head Coach Chris Creighton shouted out with joy in front of his focused team. "We still have a long way to go, and we still have plenty of things we need to do in order to protect ourselves and protect each other, but just think about the fact that after everything we, and those around us, have gone through in the last year. Think about how amazing it is to be here, on this field together, getting to play the sport we love. Life is good, everyone, life is good."
Creighton guided the team through the workout as it prepares for Friday, Sept. 3, when it will open its 2021 campaign with an under-the-lights bout with Saint Francis University (Pa.) inside The Factory. The game will officially open a season-long set of milestones and celebrations that includes EMU's 130th season on the gridiron, the Mid-American Conference's 75th anniversary of its founding, and a full slate of entertainment options and theme weeks at Rynearson Stadium.
This practice was the first of the three-day acclimation period where the players can only wear helmets, before sporting shoulder pads on the fourth day, and finally full pads on the fifth day.
Throughout the session, Creighton reminded his team of the magnitude that each practice leading up to the season opener carries, and encouraged the squad to use every drill, practice, and week throughout camp to improve as an individual player and teammate. The day began with Creighton's always popular (at least to some) "Turnover Circuit," which splits the squad into smaller units and puts them through numerous activities, all aimed at improving ball security. The activity typically features Creighton yelling intensely through a megaphone that he "borrowed," from fifth year Assistant Equipment Manager Dominic Velotta. When the megaphone isn't an option, pressurized air horns have been known to make an appearance.
From there, the practice, known as an opportunity with the program, featured various special teams drills and individual position group work. Team-based activities concluded the day's events.
After an evening walk-through session tonight, a portion of camp in-place for just the fifth year after the elimination of two-a-days following the 2016 season, practice will resume tomorrow morning with another session on the "EMU Gray," field turf.

Throughout the game, Eastern Athletics will be recognizing frontline workers and celebrating our return to Rynearson Stadium.
