Catamount Football 2021 Fall Update No. 2 – Aug. 8 - catamountsports.com

Cullowhee, N.C. – Business started to pick up on Sunday morning as the Western Carolina football team put on shoulder pads for the first time this preseason for practice No. 3 on the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field. Working out in shells – helmets and shoulder pads – the team practiced for just over two hours.

Sunday's session opened under mild conditions as the morning fog lifted through the Cullowhee Valley and concluded under blue skies and warm temperatures on the turf. The team worked through 26 periods, concluding with a competitive offense versus defense head-to-head team drills.

"Today was our first day in shoulder pads and we started a little slow being our third day of practice. I think we were a little sore. But, like I told our guys, we stacked a penny on the right side – the championship side – because our guys had great attitudes and bounced back," said WCU head coach Kerwin Bell following Sunday morning's workout. "They competed at the end, had great competition, and finished the practice the way that they should."

Among the highlights in Sunday's practice were long scoring receptions by wide receivers Daquan Patten and Jakobe Quillen, and long rushes by tailback Kenny Benjamin and Mikai Stanley. A combined six quarterbacks saw a variety of reps with four – graduate transfer Rogan Wells, returners Carlos Davis and Kason Lincke, and true freshman Meziah Scott – earning the most during team drills.

Defensively, the front seven found pressure at various times throughout practice with Tre Jolly tallying a tackle for loss in the thud-up practice session. In the secondary, Rod Gattison knocked a pass away intended for tight end Owen Cosenke, and freshman Andreas Keaton deflected a long pass at the goal line among some of the highlights.

Overall, Bell said that he has been pleased with his squad's efforts over the first three days of the 2021 preseason fall camp.

"We've put a lot in and our kids have handled it extremely well. I can see progress every day. They've been very focused and paying attention. We've got about 20 more practices to go, we need to keep that same attitude and that same focus. If we do, we're going to be in good shape."

The Catamounts continue preseason practice on Monday morning with their second of three consecutive sessions in shells before going in full pads for the first time on Wednesday, Aug. 11.

Each of WCU's preseason football practices is open to the public. It is respectfully requested, though, that spectators observe from the stadium seating area and avoid being either on the field or the sidelines for safety, and maintain physical distance from the team at all times. Practice times are subject to change.
