Norco hands Centennial its first Big VIII League football loss in 11 seasons - Press-Enterprise

NORCO — There was plenty of excitement on the Norco sidelines when the Cougars had a 14-point lead in the third quarter.

Cougars coach Chuck Chastain was not ready to celebrate. After all, Saturday afternoon’s opponent was  Centennial.

“You have to knock the king off and take it from them. You can’t expect them to lie down or roll over for you,” Chastain said.

Centennial rallied and had an opportunity to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. However, Norco scored 10 points in a span of 55 seconds down the stretch and held on for a 38-36 victory in a mistake-filled Big VIII League game.

Norco snapped Centennial’s Inland-record 57-game league winning streak and scored its first victory over the Huskies since the 2009 season. Saturday’s loss also was Centennial’s first against an Inland team in nine seasons (Vista Murrieta in 2011).

“I am at a loss for words,” said Norco senior defensive back Steven Cuadra, who had an interception and a fumble recovery Saturday afternoon. “For the seniors, we have been working for this moment for four years. And with all the adversity this year, from coronavirus and not knowing if we would have a season, we are thankful for a chance to compete for a league title.”

Centennial (2-1) tied the score with 7:06 on the clock, when Eric Butler Jr. made a juggling catch in the end zone for a 31-yard touchdown from Jake Retzlaff. The score was still tied at 28 when the Huskies took possession at the 2:36 mark. Centennial turned the ball over on the first play of the drive, however, as a snap sailed over the head of Izzy Carter.

There was a mad scramble for the ball, but Cuadra was the one who ended up with ball in his hands at the Centennial 6.

“Our defense scrapped all game,” Chastain said. “They made some mistakes, but they got right back in there and fought.”

Norco (3-0) took a 35-28 lead when Jacob Rosendahl scored on a 5-yard run with 2:17 to play. Centennial turned the ball over on downs on its next drive, and Carson Irvin extended Norco’s lead to 38-28 when he drilled a 34-yard field goal.

Centennial made things interesting in the final minutes. The Huskies marched 80 yards on just six plays, and cut the deficit to 38-36 with 22 seconds left after a 1-yard scoring run by Ryan Reynoso and a two-point conversion by Retzlaff.

Brandon Manley recovered an onside kick moments later to seal the victory for Norco.

Centennial finished with more than 500 yards, but it took a while for the Huskies to establish a consistent rhythm.

“Some of the mistakes that we had in our scrimmage and first game, we thought we ironed those out in that second game,” Huskies coach Matt Logan said. “Norco played great, but we didn’t help ourselves. There were mistakes all over the place.”

Norco’s Kyle Crum completed 14 of 30 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown.

“This is the opportunity we all have wanted,” Crum said. “To get the win and have this feeling truly is a blessing from God.”

Retzlaff completed 21 of 34 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns. Eric Denham had career highs of 12 catches and 241 receiving yards, boosted by an 83-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter.
