At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds with speed and athleticism, Jaren Kanak offers colleges options at several positions. Iowa Football likes him at linebacker.
The Hawkeyes recently extended a scholarship offer to the Hays (KS) High junior. They've made a strong early impression.
"I hear the most from coach (Seth) Wallace and coach (Tyler) Barnes. The offer is pretty recent so the relationship basically consists of getting to know more about each other and learning more about Iowa," Kanak told HN.
"They think I would be a good fit just based on the potential I have at the linebacker position. They think I would do very well with it at Iowa. I like talking to them both and am looking forward to building the relationship."
Kanak also reports scholarship offers from home-state Kansas and Kansas State, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Washington State and others. He's learning about schools virtually until the recruiting dead period ends on May 31.
"I’m primarily focused on the Power 5 schools at the moment. They stand out most, and I hear from them the most," he said.
"I would like to determine and visit my top schools before making a final decision. I don’t have a specific timeline on this yet."
As good as Kanak has been to date, his ceiling is much higher. He's looking for a college football program that can help him reach it.
"I really like (the Hawkeyes') history for developing players. They are a good football team and have been good in recent years," he said.
He embraces the idea of playing linebacker, the only position Iowa has talked about with him. He's open to other options, however.
"If I were to play offense, I think my skill set would transition well into an H-Back position," he said.
Multiple outlets named him all-state at running back.
Kanak has scheduled a campus visit to Iowa for June 11.
"I’m just looking to learning more about the program overall; facilities, campus, meeting coaches, and getting an overall feel for Iowa," he said.
He plans on studying Kinesiology when he gets to college.
Rivals and 247 ranks Kanak as a three-star prospect. The former sees him as the No. 47 Athlete nationally in the 2022 recruiting class while the latter puts him at 50th in the cycle.
