In a major development that could have a ripple effect that impacts the Nevada Wolf Pack's ability to play football in 2020, the California State University system said Tuesday it plans on canceling all in-person classes for the fall and will continue online instruction.
"This virtual planning approach for the next academic year is necessary because of the evolving data surrounding the progression of COVID-19," CSU Chancellor Timothy White said.
Three of the Mountain West's 11 full-time universities are members of the California State University system, including Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State. MW commissioner Craig Thompson said last month campuses being fully operational was a prerequisite for college athletics being held in 2020-21.
"Unless they're in full mode with dormitories and housing and all of the other facilities are open, we won't have college athletics," Thompson told the MW Network. "We will not have college athletics until the campuses are open."
NCAA president Mark Emmert said last week he believes schools shouldn't be playing sports, including football, if campuses are not open to students in the fall.
“You’ve got to treat the health and well-being of the athletes at least as much as the regular students,” he said last week during an NCAA-streamed interview. "So if a school doesn’t reopen, then they’re not going to be playing sports. It’s really that simple.”
The MW could potentially forge forward in 2020 without the schools in the California State University system in the fold, although that would require massive changes to conference schedules. College football also could shift its season to the spring, although that could create other issues. The Nevada System of Higher Education has begun planning to resume in-person classes for the 2020 fall semester and more limited in-person class offerings later this summer after July 1.
Hawaii, which plays football in the MW, has instituted a mandatory 14-day quarantine rule, which would make it impossible for teams to play on the islands this season if that rule is unchanged when the season begins.
Kelly Lyell, a reporter for the Fort Collins Coloradoan, reached out to the MW on Tuesday for a response to Cal State decision and was told athletic directors and presidents will have to weigh in before a decision on the conference's fall football fate is made.
The importance of playing a college football season can't be overestimated considering the amount of revenue the sport pulls in. Thompson said last month if college football isn't played, it's unlikely any other college sport is waged next season.
"The matter of the fact is that if there's no college football this fall, there's very little likelihood there will be any other sports because 85 percent of the revenue derived in college athletics comes from the sport of football," Thompson said.
