As long as there is a college football season, the Texas Longhorns are going to be serious Big 12 contenders in 2020.
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the way the Longhorns’ roster is shaping up. From veterans on the offensive line to the stacked secondary, here are five reasons for optimism heading into next season:
Longhorns stack up on RBs
Texas’ running back room was dismantled by injuries last year, leaving the Longhorns with just one scholarship back at some points. One season later, Texas not only returns an experienced Keaontay Ingram, but the electric Roschon Johnson is staying in the backfield and five-star recruit Bijan Robinson is also going to make some noise when he arrives to campus.
Texas finally fields experienced defense
The Longhorns return a plethora of talent on defense -- eight starters to be exact. It’s really the secondary that deserves attention right now: Caden Sterns, Chris Brown, Josh Thompson, B.J. Foster and D’Shawn Jamison are all coming back for what is shaping up to be a unit full of talent and experience. Oh, yeah, and we may see linebacker Joseph Ossai’s full potential if he is finally utilized properly.
Sam Ehlinger has plenty of options at WR
It’s hard to expect any receiver to replicate Devin Duvernay’s 106-catch season or receive the same attention Collin Johnson demanded, but Texas has options. With Jordan Whittington moving to receiver, he will be in a position to follow up Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Duvernay with a massive season of his own in the slot. The Longhorns also have Brennan Eagles, Jake Smith, Joshua Moore, Marcus Washington, Michigan transfer Tarik Black and incoming freshman Troy Omeire. The Longhorns lose 6-6 Johnson, but they still have plenty of size with Eagles at 6-4, and Omeire and Black at 6-3.
Epps, Brewer lead way as weapons at TE
Aside from the playmakers at wide receiver, the Longhorns are also transitioning 6-6 Malcolm Epps to tight end. It will be interesting to see how new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich utilizes both Epps and Cade Brewer now that the Longhorns appear to be set at tight end, which hasn’t exactly been the case for quite some time.
Cosmi, Kerstetter lead offensive line of veterans
Yes, Texas lost a four-year starter in center Zach Shackelford, but chances are you aren’t the least bit worried if you looked down the rest of the line. Samuel Cosmi, a projected first-rounder in the way-too-early 2021 NFL mock drafts, leads the way along with Derek Kerstetter, who can play anywhere on the line and just might do that in 2020 depending on the situations that arise. Aside from Cosmi and Kerstetter, Texas also gets back another starter in Junior Angilau along with fifth-year senior Denzel Okafor. All of this is to say: Texas shouldn’t have too many worries revolving around the offensive line.
