Syracuse AD John Wildhack: No plans to cancel college football season yet - New York Post

Everyone seemingly has a different prediction about when – or if – the college football season will start amid the coronavirus pandemic, which canceled the NCAA Tournament and has postponed all professional sports. Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack believes the time for realistic decisions will be in June, but so far, there haven’t been any talks in ACC circles about the season not being held.

In a virtual press conference, Wildhack told reporters that ACC athletic directors and head coaches expect players will need six weeks to prepare for the season, and that in mid-to-late June, a decision will be made if the season can start on time.

“We want to play,” Wildhack said, according to Syracuse.com. “We plan to play. What we don’t know is when we’re going to start and what format we’re going to start [in].

“Do you play with fans? Do you not play with fans? So much is unknown, but the ADs in the conference office meet twice per week, and there’s not been one second of conversation about not having a football season in some way, shape or form.”

Obviously, there is a lot of guessing going on. Top ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit said on ESPN Radio that the powers-that-be in college football have four contingency plans if the season can’t start on time. One is starting in February or March, with the College Football Playoff in June.

“You need to see progress in terms of combating the virus, in terms of slowing the spread of the virus,” Wildhack said. “Obviously, everyone talks about testing, testing, testing. Everyone talks about contact tracing and that sort of thing. So much of what we do, we’ll take from the cues of elected officials, medical experts at the federal, state and local level. And everything we do is in lockstep with the university.”

“Part of it is you try to identify where the risks are and try to quantify what those risks could be,” he added. “So much is unknown at this point in time, but we were able to realize significant savings. From the cancellation of spring sports, our staff has been very diligent about trying to manage our expenses. At the same time, as you look at the next year, you’ve got to build a variety of budget contingencies.”
