Meet TCPalm's All-Decade Defensive Football Team and vote for the Player of the Decade - TCPalm

The best defenders are the ones who keep offensive coordinators up at night.

They’re the guys you design entire blocking schemes to stop, or force you to determine whether it’s worth throwing the ball in their area because you run a greater risk of a turnover.

TCPalm’s All-Decade Defensive Football Team is loaded with those types of players.

Since 2010, the All-Area Defensive Player of the Year award has gone to a defensive lineman three times, a linebacker three times and a defensive back four times, providing a great foundation for the team. That also made some very difficult decisions for the few remaining spots on the team.

The four defensive linemen are Fort Pierce Central’s Rashawn Shaw and Jerandious Works, Jensen Beach’s Chris Favoroso and Sebastian River’s Tim Smith.

Works and Shaw — the All-Area Player of the Year selections in 2012 and 2013, respectively — were a big reason why the Cobras lost only one regular-season game during those two seasons. Shaw had double-digit sacks three years in a row, and Works had 32 tackles for loss as a senior.

Favoroso and Smith, the lone active player on the team, were two unlockable forces. Favoroso set program records for sacks (31) and tackles for loss (35) as a senior. Smith, a finalist for All-Area Defensive Player of the Year, was a second-team All-American as a senior.

The four linebackers are Sebastian River’s Daniel Lee, South Fork’s Blake Lucky, John Carroll Catholic’s Brock Miller and Jensen Beach’s Nico Sawtelle. Lee, Lucky and Miller all were Defensive Player of the Year award winners.

Lee and Lucky, a two-time first-team all-state selection, both had more than 140 tackles during their senior seasons. Miller was a dominant force for the Golden Rams with 65 tackles for loss as a senior. Sawtelle, Favoroso’s high school teammate, had 132 tackles and 12 sacks as a senior.

The five defensive backs on the team include former All-Area Defensive Players of the Year Dre Grace (St. Lucie West Centennial), Wayne Parks (Sebastian River), Jamien Sherwood (Jensen Beach) and Justin Simmons (Martin County) and two-time first-team all-state pick Joe Figueroa (Central).

Simmons and Figueroa rewrote their school record books for career interceptions with 24 and 13, respectively. Grace was a ball-hawking cornerback for the Eagles and led the area with nine interceptions in 2018. Parks was a key playmaker on a Sharks defense that posted eight shutouts in 2016. Sherwood, an Offense-Defense All-American in 2017, had 71 tackles as a senior.

Former Okeechobee punter Jarrett Mills (Okeechobee) and John Carroll Catholic dynamic returner/athlete Edwin Thomas round out the special teams spots.

TCPalm is going through the past 10 years to select All-Decade high school sports teams. Players were selected from TCPalm’s annual All-Area first teams for each sport between the 2010-11 and 2019-20 school years.
