Alabama football account tweets at President Donald Trump - 247Sports

After releasing his three-phase plan to reopen parts of the country within states showing a downward coronavirus trajectory last week, President Donald Trump anticipates a return to normalcy — including a welcoming back of college football this fall — as the disease curve continues to flatten nationwide. He mentioned the University of Alabama specifically during a speech on April 16, detailing what he deems would be an ideal scenario for the 2020 season.

“Our normal is if you have 100,000 people in an Alabama football game, or 110,000 to be exact, we want 110,000 people there,” Trump said during one of last week's daily press conferences. “We want every seat occupied. Normal is not going to be a game where you have 50,000 people.”

Alabama's official football Twitter account gave President Trump a shoutout after his message.

"That’s what we like to hear Mr. President! We will keep doing our part to make this happen," Alabama's official account tweeted, tagging President Trump.

Trump and first lady, Melania, attended Alabama's home game vs. LSU last season, receiving a standing ovation in the first half. President Trump tweeted "such an amazing game and place!" after the game and thanked both teams for their hospitality.

With coronavirus deaths reportedly peaking in hot zones around the country, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the central figure of President Trump's front-facing coronavirus task force team, believes professional sports can return this summer if strict parameters are put in place for players and coaches.

"There's a way of doing that," Fauci told Snapchat's Peter Hamby last week, via ESPN. "Nobody comes to the stadium. Put [the players] in big hotels, wherever you want to play, keep them very well surveilled. ... Have them tested every single week and make sure they don't wind up infecting each other or their family, and just let them play the season out."

Fauci did not mention a potential plan for college sports specifically, but others this month have opined that student-athletes would need to be able to return to campus safely with low-risk of spread.

ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum recently blasted the idea of a season without crowds this fall, echoing President Trump's sentiment that games should only be played inside stadiums with fans.

"That would be a pure professional sellout," Finebaum said on ESPN. "I think it would cheapen the sport, it would devalue everything college presidents and administrators stand up for at orientation and graduation. I don't think we'd ever recover from that."

According to the CDC, the number of positive COVID-19 cases is approaching 800,000 in the United States with the deal toll at 41,114 as of Monday's latest update.
