Stony Brook has only had a football team since 1984. The Seawolves have also had some success and are clearly not afraid to add more competitive teams (like Oregon football) to their schedule. Going back to 2017, Stony Brook had had road trip losses at South Florida (2017), Air Force (2018), and Utah State (2019).
Last season was different, as it was for all of us. The Seawolves had just four games and lost three of them.
Stony Brook comes out of the Colonial Athletic Conference of the FCS, which may be more known for basketball than football. It’s the home of James Madison, Delaware, Villanova, William & Mary, and Albany. I’m sorry if you’re not a fan of the Delaware Blue Hens, but you certainly should be.
The Seawolves have had some solid success in their short history. They have five conference championships to their credit, including four straight from 2009-2012. The team also finished 10-3 in 2017 and made the FCS playoff in 2018. The program has also made it a point to recruit nationwide and has found success over the last decade because of it.
Stony Brook has had just two coaches in its history. It started with Sam Kornhauser from 1984-2005. Chuck Priore has been at the helm since the 2006 season, working the team through several different conference changes and looking to help build the program toward bigger and better things. I’m not sure he can adequately prepare his team to face the No. 4 team in the country, but the Seawolves will certainly have more eyes on them than usual.
This season, the Seawolves are 1-1 and don’t have much of an offense outside of two 100-yard rushers to keep an eye on. Stony Brook lost to New Hampshire and beat Colgate so far this season, but obviously it hasn’t seen a team the caliber of Oregon yet.
Oregon will be the highest-ranked opponent that Stony Brook has faced in its history.
The Seawolves will play their latest game of the season on Saturday, which will start just after 7:30 p.m. ET. The rest of their schedule starts before 12:30 pm, with several games at 10 a.m. ET.
Oregon football and Stony Brook kick off at 4:30 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Network Saturday evening.
