Fast starts have been few and far between in the Panthers’ 26-year history. But with a win tonight at Houston, the Panthers will be 3-0 for just the fifth time.
In two of those previous instances, the Panthers went on to their only Super Bowl appearances. Only once did the Panthers fail to make the playoffs after winning their first three games: John Fox’s first team lost eight in a row after a 3-0 start and finished 7-9.
Of course, critics will say the Panthers haven’t beaten anybody. And though the Panthers are facing a rookie quarterback for the second time in three weeks, they also drubbed a Saints team that was the talk of the NFL the previous week after blowing out Green Bay.
There will be tougher tests to come, but this Panthers’ defense is special. They’re young, fast and well coached, with defensive coordinator Phil Snow sending pressure from everywhere.
The keys for the Panthers tonight: Sam Darnold must protect the ball and the defense must stop running back Mark Ingram on first and second downs to put Davis Mills in a lot of third-and-long situations. I have the Panthers winning big, 31-13.
