College football polls: Updated AP Top 25, Coaches Poll rankings after Week 4 - Sporting News

Once again, what looked like it was supposed to be a quiet, predictable weekend of college football turned out to have a massive impact in the College Football Playoff race.

Two more top-10 teams went down in Week 4, with No. 7 Texas A&M losing a 20-10 stunner to No. 16 Arkansas in Arlington. At least that was a ranked loss; No. 9 Clemson can't make that claim in a 27-21 double overtime loss to unranked N.C. State, a defeat that completely drops the Tigers from Playoff consideration, if past precedent tells us anything.

Even No. 4 Oklahoma — which fielded boos and calls for backup quarterback Caleb Plant to play — needed a last-second field goal over West Virginia to beat the Mountaineers 16-13. It's the Sooners' third victory this season by less than a possession, a far cry from the expectations heaped on this team in the preseason.

Oh, but that's not all: No. 12 Notre Dame scored the most impressive victory of the season with a 41-13 win over No. 18 Wisconsin, one that featured 31 fourth-quarter points. Elsewhere, unranked Baylor (4-0) and Oklahoma State (4-0) beat No. 14 Iowa State and No. 25 Kansas State, joining the Sooners as the only two remaining undefeated teams in the Big 12. And Georgia Tech completely deflated the North Carolina program, beating the No. 21-ranked Tar Heels 45-21 in Atlanta.

There were several other close calls among the top 25, including No. 5 Iowa's 24-14 win over Colorado State; No. 19 Michigan's 20-13 win over Rutgers; No. 20 Michigan State's 23-20 win over Nebraska; and No. 23 Auburn's 34-24 win over Georgia State (a win helped greatly due to yet another SEC officiating error).

Who knows what next week's going to look like? With that, here are the updated top 25 rankings heading into Week 5 of the season:
