MONMOUTH, Ore. – With four road games in the books, the Western Oregon University football team will now return to McArthur Field for the first time since November 2019 when they host West Texas A&M this Saturday for a 1:05 p.m. kickoff.
It certainly has been a long time between home games, as WOU finished the 2019 season with four of their final five games that year at home.
So far this year, WOU (1-3) has traveled to play in three different states and last week played in Canada to open GNAC play against Simon Fraser. The Wolves put together a strong second half to take the 24-7 win in Canada last week. Omari Land put together an impressive day rushing for 209 yards and two touchdowns. Andrew Valladares added 74 yards.
Curtis Anderson and Ryan Minniti led the defense with six tackles apiece. Jaylin Parnell had two sacks, a forced fumble, two pass breakups and a blocked field goal. Anderson, Minniti, Joey Sinclair, Mason Brown, L.J. Lovelace, Kenny Brown, Twister McComas and Rocky Mataia all added tackles for loss.
WOU has tallied 44 points and 76 first downs, along with 1,257 total yards and five touchdowns this season. Following the big game last week on the ground, the Wolves are now at 460 yards on the ground and four rushing scores. Through the air, WOU has passed for 802 yards and a TD. Opponents have recorded 94 points and 66 first downs, along with 1,230 total yards and 13 touchdowns. The rushing attack has picked up 521 yards and five touchdowns and have thrown for 752 yards and seven TD.
Ryan Worthley has completed 88-141 for 761 yards and a touchdown, averaging 190.25 yards per game. Land has rushed for 359 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 89.75 yards per game. Valladares is just short of 100 yards on the season sitting at 97. Thomas Wright has caught 18 passes for 186 yards, with a long reception of 42 yards. Jarren Ford has 19 receptions for 140 yards, with a long catch of 20 yards. Valladares gives the Wolves three with over 100 receiving yards sitting at 109 yards on 10 catches, with a long of 22 yards. Damon Hickok adds eight catches for 86 yards and a touchdown, Marquis Sampson has 13 catches for 80 yards and Justice Murphy has five catches for 76 yards.
Minniti leads the defense with 27 tackles (17 solo) and has a tackle for loss. Parnell has 22 tackles (16 solo), along with 7.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a blocked field goal. Sinclair is third on the team in tackles with 19 (11 solo), while tallying a tackle for loss, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery. L.J. Lovelace has 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack, along with five quarterback hurries. Billy Nelson and Luis Vicino Jr. each have interceptions for the Wolves.
As a team, WOU ranks high nationally in multiple categories including 47th in third down conversion percentage on defense (33.3), 40th in blocked kicks (1), 44th in completion percentage (61.8), 44th in passing yards allowed (188), 41st in red zone defense percentage (68.8) and 49th in total defense yards allowed per game (318.2).
In special teams, Daniel Cossette has hit three field goals. On kickoffs, Andrew Gross has six kickoffs for a 59.7 average, while Tanner Shattuck has four kickoffs for a 46.5 average. In punting, Gross has 19 punts for an average of 40.74 with three traveling over 50 yards and five landing inside the 20.
On returns, Sampson has 10 punt returns for 73 yards, with a long of 39 yards. On kickoff returns, Anderson has eight returns for 151 yards, with a long of 38 yards. Sampson has four returns for 114 yards, with a long of 52 yards.
Individually, Land ranks 31st nationally in rushing yards (359) and 37th in rushing yards per game (89.8). Sampson is 40th nationally in punt return yards per game (7.3) and 48th in combined kick return yards (187). Worthley is 21st nationally in completions per game (22), 44th in completion percentage (62.4) and 65th in passing yards (761). Cossette is 26th nationally in field goal percentage (75) and 52nd in field goals per game (0.75). Derek Moreland is tied for 43rd nationally in forced fumbles per game (0.33). Sinclair is tied for 23rd nationally in fumbles recovered (1). Gross is 50th nationally in punting average per game (38.7). Parnell is 18th nationally in tackles for loss per game (1.9).
This will be the first meeting between the teams. West Texas A&M enters with a 2-2 overall record and are off to a 1-1 start in Lone Star Conference play. They have wins over Texas College (73-0) and Western New Mexico (42-14). They lost their conference opener on the road at UT Permian Basin (41-32) and fell just short this past week against nationally-ranked Colorado Mines by a 21-13 score in Canyon.
WT has tallied 159 points, 82 first downs, 1,744 total yards of offense and 21 touchdowns. In the air, the Buffs have passed for 957 yards and eight touchdowns, while on the ground rushing for 787 yards and 13 scores. Opponents have 77 points, 71 first downs, 1,253 total yards of offense and 11 touchdowns. Teams have thrown for 858 yards and eight touchdowns, while rushing for 395 yards and three scores.
Nick Gerber has been the main quarterback this season completing 61-97 for 952 yards and eight touchdowns. Khalil Harris leads the rushing attack going for 321 yards and four touchdowns. Jarrod Compton has 139 yards and a touchdown. Marcus Lindsay adds 120 yards and three touchdowns, while Isaia Smallwood has a pair of touchdowns. Noah Bogardus has caught 11 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. Tyrie Tipton has 10 catches for 185 yards. Hunter Kaufman adds six catches for 155 yards and a score, while Markell Stephens-Peppers gives the Buffs four with over 100 receiving yards at 137 and three touchdowns.
On defense, JT Cavender leads the way with 35 tackles (22 solo), along with two tackles for loss and a sack. Cole Oster has 25 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Eric Collins and Victor Smith each have 3.5 tackles for loss.
On special teams, Mauricio Gonzalez is averaging 61.7 yards on 23 kickoffs. Gage Urias is 4-5 on field goal attempts and Brayden Welch is averaging 39.63 on eight punts.
A look around the GNAC this past week saw Central Washington stay close with Angelo State before the Rams claimed the 14-9 win in Ellensburg. Central Washington is 2-2, WOU is 1-3 and Simon Fraser is 0-4 through the first four weeks of the season.
