BURNABY, B.C. – For the past month, the Western Oregon University football team has played in three different states and this week will play in Canada to open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The Wolves will play at Simon Fraser Saturday night with kickoff set for 6 p.m. at SFU's new stadium at Terry Fox Field.
Simon Fraser opened their new stadium this past week and put up a valiant effort against Central Washington before the Wildcats pulled away for the 36-14 victory. The score was just 15-14 in favor of Central Washington at the half.
SFU had played Division I Idaho to open the season falling 68-0 on the road and then played at Division III Linfield falling 56-20 before hosting Central Washington.
Simon Fraser will end up having just two home games this year, as the game against WOU will be the second and final home contest. SFU finishes the season with four straight road games.
WOU has gone 21-1 in the series since 2000, winning the past 21 games. The Wolves are 10-1 in Canada with the only loss coming back in 2000 (21-17). During the 2019 season, WOU won in Burnaby (45-14) and in Monmouth (51-14).
The Wolves are coming off of a hard-fought game against Division I Portland State in which WOU fell just short, 21-7. Ryan Worthley threw for 211 yards and a touchdown to Damon Hickok. Omari Land rushed for 47 yards and Jarren Ford caught seven passes for 61 yards.
Ryan Minniti led the defense with seven tackles (six solo) and Jaylin Parnell added six solo tackles, with one tackle for loss. Luis Vicino Jr., tallied an interception in the end zone and Derek Moreland forced a fumble. L.J. Lovelace had a pair of quarterback hurries. The defense held Portland State to a 4-12 conversion rate on third down and a 3-5 effort in the red zone, coming away with a turnover and forcing a couple of missed field goals.
Worthley has completed 74-114 for 674 yards and a touchdown. Land has rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown. Thomas Wright leads the receivers with 172 receiving yards on 13 catches. Ford has a team-high 17 receptions for 122 yards. Valladares adds nine catches for 87 yards, Hickok with seven catches for 81 yards, Marquis Sampson with 12 catches for 78 yards and Justice Murphy with five catches for 76 yards. A total of 11 different receivers have at least one catch so far this season.
On defense, Minniti leads the way with 21 tackles, with 15 coming solo. Parnell has 19 tackles, with 15 also being solo, 5.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Joey Sinclair has 15 tackles, with nine coming solo and a fumble recovery. Kenny Brown (13 tackles) and Machiah Lee (10 tackles) give the Wolves five players with at least 10 tackles. Mack Little and Lovelace each have a sack and Billy Nelson has the other interception.
Overall, as an offense WOU has 850 total yards, averaging 283.3 per game. Most of that has come through the air passing for 715 yards. The Wolves have both a passing and rushing TD this year. The defense has allowed 1,046 total yards, averaging 348.7 per game. That has been split pretty evenly with 550 through the air and 496 on the ground, opponents have six TD passes and five rushing scores.
On special teams, Andrew Gross, coming off of his GNAC Special Teams Player of the Week award, has punted 15 times for an average of 39.40 yards. He has a long of 65 yards, four landing inside the 20, five fair catches and two that have traveled over 50 yards. Daniel Cossette has connected on a pair of field goals this year, while Gross has handled most of the kickoff duties, averaging 60.5 yards on four tries.
In the return game, Curtis Anderson has taken seven kickoffs back for 143 yards, with a long of 38. Sampson has three kickoff returns for 62 yards with a long of 26. On punt returns, Sampson has five returns for 17 yards, with a long of 20.
SFU is led by QB Justin Seiber who has completed 49-93 for 582 yards and four touchdowns. Mason Glover has rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown, while Paul Thomas has 40 rushing yards this year. Caelin Johnson leads the receivers with 226 yards on 10 catches and three touchdowns. Riley Morrison has 23 catches for 194 yards. Dallas Dixon gives the team three with over 100 receiving yards bringing in eight catches for 108 yards.
On defense, Griffin Barrett has 33 tackles (22 solo) and a tackle for loss. Jerrell Cummings adds 18 tackles (14 solo). Kolby Buljevic had 16 tackles and two tackles for loss. Drew Nicholson has the only interception.
On special teams, Sam Davenport has punted 13 times for an average of 33.54 yards, while Kees Metselaar has nine punts for an average of 37.33 yards. Metselaar handles the kickoff duties averaging 56.4 yards. Kristie Elliott has converted four extra points and she has attempted only one field goal this year.
On returns, Robert Meadors has 12 kickoff returns for 230 yards.
Overall, Simon Fraser has tallied 721 total yards and five touchdowns, throwing for 695 yards and four TD. Defensively, SFU has allowed 1,611 yards and 21 touchdowns (13 rushing), with 838 on the ground and 790 through the air.
Nationally, WOU ranks high in several categories including: 20th in completion percentage (64), 29th in kickoff return yards average (24.57), 69th in net punting (34.69), 53rd in INT's thrown (2), 76th in passes intercepted (defensively) (2), 63rd in passing offense per game (238.3), 50th in passing yards allowed per game (183.3), 34th in time of possession (31:42) and 78th in total defense (348.7). Individually, Cossette ranks 42nd nationally in field goal percentage (66.7) and 53rd in field goals per game (0.67). Moreland is tied for 56th nationally in forced fumbles per game (0.33), Sinclair is tied for 19th in fumbles recovered (1) and Worthley is 92nd in passing yards (463).
