HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana and Florida Atlantic will meet on the gridiron for the first time in the 2022 season, SLU and FAU officials announced on Tuesday.
The Lions will travel to face the Owls on Sept. 10, 2022 in Boca Raton, Florida. The game is one of three nonconference games on the 2022 slate for Southeastern. SLU will start the campaign at UL Lafayette on Sept. 3, before opening its home schedule on Sept. 17 versus Central Connecticut State.
FAU plays at the FBS level as a member of Conference USA. The Owls finished 5-4 overall in 2020, including a 4-2 league mark. Under head coach Willie Taggart, Florida Atlantic was selected to compete in the Montgomery Bowl, dropping a 25-10 decision to Memphis.
Southeastern will travel to face UL Lafayette to open 2022. The 40th all-time meeting between the two in-state schools will be the first since 2017, when the Ragin’ Cajuns outlasted SLU in a 51-48 shootout in the season opener. UL Lafayette finished 10-1 in 2020, including a win over UTSA in the SERVPRO First Responders Bowl.
Central Connecticut State will come to Hammond in 2022 to complete a home-and-home with the Lions that starts this coming September with SLU traveling up to New Britain, Connecticut. The Blue Devils won the Northeast Conference and participated in the NCAA FCS Playoffs in 2019, before opting out of the 2020-21 season.
Walter Payton Award winner Cole Kelley, as well as first team All-Southland selections Ferlando Jordan, Jalen Bell and CJ Turner lead a contingent of 17 all-conference performers returning this fall for the 2021 Lions, who open the season at home on Sept. 4, welcoming North Alabama to Strawberry Stadium.
