The movement in the NCAA Transfer Portal looks to continue for the Texas football program this week. New head coach Steve Sarkisian didn’t have much noise coming out of the transfer portal in the last few weeks. But that could all change here in the near future. The last official additions out of the transfer portal for Texas were former Alabama senior linebacker Ben Davis and New Mexico State redshirt sophomore linebacker Devin Richardson.
This now amounts to five total gets out of the transfer portal for Sark and the Longhorns so far this offseason. And considering they haven’t lost anyone to the transfer portal in the last few weeks, it makes sense that things are mostly quiet on this front of late.
The next position group that appears that Sark is looking to bolster out of the portal now is the secondary. That was anticipated given the number of transfer additions along the front seven thus far. The lone addition to the secondary out of the portal so far is the former McNeese State Cowboys FCS graduate transfer and senior cornerback Darion Dunn.
While it’s clear that Dunn can make an impact out of the gates for the Texas secondary from what he did during spring ball and a proven track record from his time at McNeese State, more help at corner could be on the way. According to a 247Sports report on May 26 (paid content), Texas is a viable option for the former Tulsa Golden Hurricane underrated two-star recruit and cornerback Akayleb Evans.
A former under-the-radar recruit and McKinney, TX, native Evans is an intriguing option by all accounts for the Longhorns. He put his name in the portal back on May 11 and drew a good amount of interest since then. Texas could get a one-on-one cornerback that would fit well with new defensive backs coach Terry Joseph in Evans.
During his three and a half years or so playing for Tulsa, Evans registered 82 career combined tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, 11 pass breakups, and one forced fumbles. He was a force for the Tulsa secondary the past few seasons.
If Texas is seriously considering adding another cornerback to their roster this offseason, then Evans might be the best option in the portal at the moment. Texas could find a good one and truly round out the depth at the cornerback position if this is the case.
Texas finished up last season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the direction of the former head coach Tom Herman. Back on Jan. 2, the former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator/reigning Broyles Award winner Sark took over for Herman as the next Texas head coach.
