Good morning, and Happy Easter. The Washington State Cougars football team is idle on this Sunday, following three consecutive days of spring practice. Unfortunately for us fans, coverage of the first few days has been scant since beat writer Theo Lawson is busy visiting every basketball venue in Indiana. That leaves a paucity of information about how things are going thus far, but to be honest, there probably wouldn’t be a whole lot we could infer after a few days in shells, anyway.
But while we don’t have much reporting, we do have head coach Nick Rolovich’s takeaways.
Elsewhere on Planet Coug, College Football News put together a piece this week that laid out the best and worst case scenarios for each team in the Pac-12. I will admit to being quite surprised at their view of WSU’s floor in 2021.
While the overall spring prediction is 6-6, the “worst” they see WSU finishing is 5-7. I don’t know about you but I thought any “worst case” involving WSU coming off a shaky 1-3 “season” would not be 5-7. It’s probably a testament to the less-than-daunting non-conference schedule, and the fact that they front load home games.
On the other end of the spectrum, the “best case” is 8-4. Maybe it’s crazy, but I could be talked into signing up for 8-4 right here, right now. The writers are definitely enthused about WSU’s offense.
It’ll be an interesting team for Nick Rolovich’s second season. The skill guys are great, the O line should be fine, and the schedule is relatively manageable with two easy non-conference games and a home date with BYU. Oregon and Washington are on the road, but six of the first eight games are in Pullman.
I’m not sure they’re totally aware of the losses at receiver, namely Jamire Calvin, but I have faith that Rolovich and Co. will have that unit rounded into form pretty quickly. I’m just happy that WSU actually gets to have a spring football session this year, and am holding out hope that at least a handful of fans will be allowed to watch the spring game in person. You never know.
WSU will hold its fourth session on Tuesday, and soon after that hopefully Mr. Lawson will be back from the great Midwest to give us a clue into the goings-on.

The Cover 3 podcast is one of the better college football pods you’ll find out there, and last week they took an early look at the Pac-12 North. They didn’t spend much time on WSU, but it should help quench the offseason thirst.

Cougs (finally) win! After a long losing streak, during which the pitching staff mostly got shellacked, WSU was finally able to overcome another ghastly outing on the mound, storming back from an 8-3 deficit in the fifth inning to win in extra frames. As tends to happen, the Cougars didn’t make it easy, even after taking a lead into the eighth inning. But like their professional counterparts across the mountains did on opening night, WSU was able to push across the winning run without actually swinging the bat. We’ll take it!
The Cougars step out of conference next, taking on Utah Valley this Wednesday in Orem, followed by a weekend series in Salt Lake City against the Utah Utes.

In the bottom of the fifth, the WSU bats came alive, evening things up with a five-run inning on a Stanford error, an RBI-single from Peterson, a two-run single from Kolden and a Manzardo bases-loaded walk.
This Week in Parenting
The extended spring break rolls along unabated. With Germany continuing to play the role of “Storm Trooper No. 4” in the fight against the pandemic, the boys have taken part in more sleepovers this week than I did in, well, ever. That probably says more about me but anyway moving right along.
As anyone who either has a kid or was a kid (read: hopefully all of you) knows, the largest misnomer in the history of western civilization this side of “bipartisanship” is “sleepover.” Ain’t no sleeping going on before the clock strikes midnight. Between that and Mrs. Kendall trying to find any semi-decent attraction in the local area, the boys’ brains finally reached “factory reset” territory this week.

Regarding the nine year-old’s choice of public attire, Mrs. Kendall and I capitulated long ago. Much like the Borg, resistance is futile, especially when raising kids boils down to the choice of one’s battles. We only have the energy for so many disagreements, and this one fell off the radar. If you’re not there as a parent, you will be. Guaranteed.
