The Michigan State Spartans have announced the start time and broadcast information for the annual Green and White spring game. The spring game will start at 2:00 p.m. EDT and will air live on the Big Ten Network.
The game was already scheduled for April 24, but the announcement earlier this afternoon updated the start time and broadcast coverage. The Spartans will wrap up spring practice with the annual intra-squad game.
This is head coach Mel Tucker’s first true spring season with the Spartans, as last year the onset of COVID-19 across the United States cancelled spring team events prior to them even starting. As to whether fans will finally be able to attend a “game” with Coach Tucker on the sideline for the first time ever, that remains unclear. The MSU athletic department offered the following statement on fan attendance:
In preparation for the possibility of accommodating fans at the spring football game on April 24, MSU athletics is working on a plan that complies with the protocols established by the MDHHS
Coach Tucker offered a comment of his own during his media availability today:
Fan outreach is everything for us and we do everything we can to engage our fans. Without our fans, we really don’t have a program. We have great fans and our fans are hungry. They want to see the Spartans, they want to see us out there playing, they want to see us out there winning. I’m looking forward to the day that we can have fans in our stadium and pack that thing out and be loud and see us play winning football.
Last month, the Big Ten announced attendance protocols for the league’s remaining sporting events, including spring football games, would be left up to individual institutions and local health protocols.
As of right now, outdoor attendance in Michigan is limited to 20 percent. Michigan’s spring game was this past weekend and was closed to the public, including media. COVID-19 rates are spiking statewide right now, up 16 percent from just a week ago, posting a 16.6 percent positivity rate over the past seven days, and all while leading the nation in new cases.
